Results for Round 10

Below are the results for Round 10, but first a quick rant...

Voting was unacceptable this round! Every single icon received at least 2 votes, and that is just NOT okay. The rules for voting have been discussed repeatedly, but yet people still can't get it right. Because of this, starting next round, the voting will completely different and I ( Read more... )

Although I agree that almostaday's icon is simply wonderful, I believe that it is fair to say that every icon could have earned a fair vote or two. Some icons are obviously much better than others. However, everyone has different taste. I could point out something imperfect about every icon, including my own, and everyone takes different factors into account.

Granted, I'm sure there are some left that are still trying to pull off clever tactics in order to ensure that their icon receives top spot. Not all of us are doing that, however, and although I do not know exactly how many votes each icon received, I believe it is fair to say that the results were as they should have been.

I hope I'm not sounding too incredibly critical; I mean only to point out that no icon submitted was perfect, and that every member has different standards regarding an icon they think deserves to win in an icontest. Two votes for an icon, even the best of them all, does not seem like an unreasonable amount.

yes everyone has different tastes, but as I've stated very clearly in the past..it's not necessarily about personal taste. It's about the basics of iconning: cropping, clarity, text, originality- and some of these icons were in NO way the worst out of the twelve.

I was reading this, and I am very confused. I was wondering if you could clarify something for me. I was hoping that you explain this to me like I am a two-year-old ( ... )

With all due respect you are not a part of this competition, nor are you running it, so your reluctance to vote doesn't really bother me. What I do care about are the people in this competition who have expressed their concerns over voting.

Yes, there is actually such a thing as a 'good icon' and a 'bad icon' and if one is unable to tell that difference, it would probably be best they not vote in the LIMS challenge. I happen to run another LIMS challenge & each week the other mod & I go through the icons & discuss which ones are likely to get voted out. Each week while we always disagree on the 'best' icons, we can usually agree on the worst ones. Personal preference should come into account on things like effects used, text or even coloring, but not on things like cropping and whether the icon is over or under sharpened. Those are what I (and many other people) consider to be basics in icon making. Some of the icons in this round had that and some did not.

As a mod here, it is my job to make sure things run smoothly and fairly and ( ... )

well what's the point of having people vote for their favourites if you only want the ones you like to win?
seriously... grow up!

HA, real nice....

First, people aren't supposed to be voting for their favorites, so next time read the rules before you comment.

Second, if you're going to comment, use your name. Do not tell me to grow up when you can't even post your comment using your name.

Thanks.

Actually, in the rules it clearly states:

"Because you will be voting for the one or two icons that you think should be KICKED OFF. Instead of voting for the "best," you will vote for your least favorite."

I think what he/she meant was that if you only want your favorites to make it through. And, I fully agree, I don't think you should be allowed to be a mod if you feel that only your favorites should win.

I fully understand that there are "good icons" and "bad icons" but, I also know that it is very much personal opinion. I don't mean to sound snippy, but it really bugs me that you feel the need to complain about voting, when we are all voting just as the rules state.

Eh, I happen to disagree with you in regard to the "basics of iconning," then.

I do hope I was not the cause of too much conflict. I simply felt the need to state my disagreement.

Tell me then then what do you believe the basics of a good icon to be?

There is no basic formula to define what a good icon should and should not be. Sometimes cropping makes the icon, but so little else is done to it that it doesn't stand out to me as "good." Sometimes text fitting and clarity is wonderful, yet the image is a little blurry. An icon may be oversharp, but the effects done to it make it better. An original icon is not necessarily a good one; an unoriginal icon does not mean that it is a bad one. All icons are unique, and people's beliefs regarding what a good icon is will vary. Not everyone will agree on the basics; hell, I don't even agree with myself on the basics all of the time. It really must be taken on a case-by-case basis.

Everyone has different opinions about icons, just as everyone has different opinions about photography or other art. There are basic qualities that lots of people like, but not everyone will agree on what a "good icon" is ( ... )

I agree with you, and I don't think it's fair to make an issue out of people voting for the ones they don't like, especially when the rules say (which I did just check to make sure I hadn't just overlooked it) to vote for the one you like least. Which in my opinion, if that's not really what they meant, then it should be clarified-in the rules!
But yes, everyone has different tastes, and when it comes to 'basics of iconning', I'm sure everyone has different ideas there, too-as seen by the incredible diversity in the icons! So why shouldn't the voting reflect that? Not everyone is going to have the same ideas/standards for voting as the mods-whether the voting be by personal taste or how technically correct an icon is, I don't think we should constantly be chastised for that.

And I got voted off in...round 3 of the disney_hush one, I believe, and I had been messing with styles I had never tried before, too ;) (though I had actually been pretty pleased w/my icon that round, all things considered!)
