Man, I can't wait until my country finally gets a The Brave Little Toaster DVD release, it's something I've always wanted to watch. In the official Disney canon, we have Melody Time on DVD but not Make Mine Music, so I've seen one but not the other, which makes me sad. Seen all the others.

I think the interesting thing here is all the movies you consider underrated are ones that don't follow a traditional linear plot - they're made up of sketches and skits or shorter films smooshed into one package. (I imagine Toaster is the exception, but I haven't seen it so I can't say for sure and for the sake of my point, it's not part of the official Disney canon.) The thing is, people may have seen bits of them (for instance, as a child I knew the Beanstalk story from Fun And Fancy Free, but not the rest of the movie) but they don't realise they're part of a longer work.

I think people feel that way about Treasure Planet because it's a film that was released in their lifetime that didn't receive a lot of recognition. They got to see the less-than-stellar box office reports unfolding, or they're surprised to discover a film they might not have even known about when it was at the cinema. It gives a more immediate connection to the film, particularly in 'discovering' it.

While I love the films in your secret that I've seen (Three Caballeros is my fav background film when I'm pottering around the house, the soundtrack is divine) and it makes me sad they don't get as much recognition, you sound very frustrated about this. Maybe if you're talking with someone who loves Disney and discover they haven't seen one of these, instead of scoffing you could recommend a particular film instead? Say, if somebody's gearing up to go to Disney World, they might like to watch Caballeros because there's a ride based on it at Epcot. Or if somebody likes the darker aspects of the movies (a big Hunchback fan, for instance) they might enjoy Ichabod's story.

Like you said, everyone has to learn about these movies somewhere, and getting angry or looking down your nose at people because they haven't yet made the discovery isn't very fair - I'm sure you wouldn't have liked people doing it to you or telling you that you weren't a 'real fan' before you watched these films.

I love you, anon. Your response is perfect in every respect. (BTW, this isn't the OP.)

Oh and The Brave Little Toaster is indeed one long work and not just vignettes.
