Ariel had finished her assignments for the day, and had enjoyed the fair for a while as well, but it was time to swim, it wasn't official swim-team time, since she had to swim for at least an hour every day to keep her scales from drying out and leaving her stuck with legs forever, and that would just be all sorts of awkward ( Read more... )

Marian was passing by the pool on the way to the gym in the adjacent room, when she could have sworn she just saw a fin flick out of the water. She stopped and watched a little. "Was that?..." she mumbled to herself. She had head of mermaids before, but hadn't seen one.

Just then the girl attached to the tail bobbed up. Marian looked away in surprise. She started walking again towards the gym, hoping she hadn't offended the girl by staring.

"Oh!" Was the startled response, toppling back into the water in surprise, splashing for a moment before surfacing again with a laugh, "Hello there, I didn't think anyone else was here at this time of day."

She swept a hand over her hair to sluice the excess water out of it and lift it back from her face, "I'm Ariel, don't we have World History at the same time?"

"Oh, yeah!" After looking at Arial for a moment Marian realized she did recognize the girl from her history class. Except in history class she was sans-fin.

"I do know you, but I don't think we've been properly introduced. I'm Marian," she says taking a few steps towards the pool's edge. "Are you a freshman too?" She assumed the answer was going to be yes. Who except freshman and sophomores would take something as basic as World History?

She nodded at that, hoisting herself up easily to sit on the edge of the pool, fin still swishing through the water, "I am! I like it here, and it's nice to meet you Marian."

She swept a hand through her hair again, twisting it over her shoulder and wringing it out a little, giggling at the patter of droplets on her tail, "What other classes do you take? I'm trying to learn everything!"

"Astronomy, English, Statistics and Intro to Theater. That's my major, theater, but I'm getting my requirements out of the way right now." she listed, counting off each one on her fingers.

She had relaxed now from the initial surprise. Perhaps mermaids simply didn't come on land often, but this one seemed perfectly sociable.

"What about you? Have you picked a major yet?" She did say she wanted to learn everything, right?

She shook her head, "No, I haven't decided yet, as soon as I think I have something else comes and catches my attention, my father always said I was the flightiest of my sisters. I think art though, in general, I'll have to be more specific about it later, but right now I'm taking as much of it at once as I can, as well as Misplaced Languages."

Most mermaids didn't come to land that often, if at all, it was just that Ariel had gotten special dispensation for school.

Marian laughed. This girl was so interesting. 'flightiest of my sisters' seemed to imply she had at lest two siblings, and art and misplaced languages?

"Misplaced languages? Did we lose them somewhere?" she said with a giggle. Marian had skimmed through the catalog when she was signing up for classes, but it was massive, so she only looked at her requirements for the time being. She meant to go back at some point, but hadn't been able to yet.

"Anyway, if you do art I'd like to see your work sometime," Marian did love those sorts of things even if she had little talent for it herself.

"Oh no, lost languages is something else, misplaced is the ones that aren't really lost yet, but still need some looking after." She nodded, "And some of then need more looking after than others."

She shrugged, "And I don't know that I want to make art myself, I like learning about the history of it through the ages, helps me appreciate it."

"Ah, well then... how noble." she says smiling, nodding along to her explanation. "I'm going to go to the gym," she motions over in the direction of the adjacent room, "but there's a fair going on this week. Do you wanna go with me?"

She beamed at that, "I'd love to! I saw them setting up earlier, it looks like it's going to be so much fun!"

That was Ariel, easily excited about the strangest things.

Marian laughed. What an excitable girl. She pulled a scrap of paper out of her gym bag, and scribbled her number on it. "Call me later then OK? We'll meet at the fair," She put the paper down on one of the near by benches so it wouldn't get wet and unreadable, and skipped off towards the gym.
