He never meant to ask her. It just sorta popped out.
Wash had never really thought of himself as the kind to marry. I mean, sure he’d thought about it, but he’d always seen it as a kind of distant future type-thing, never as a now.
So when he asked her that night, cuddled up in his bed, to marry him, he wasn’t quite sure who was more surprised at the question. Her of him.

Zoë had always known it would happen one day. But she’d never thought of it as a now kind of thing, always as a future.
So when he’d asked her that night, if she’d marry him, she wasn’t quite sure who was more surprised that she said yes. Him or her.
