[Balto spots a pretty young woman dragging a suitcase behind her. Being the friendly dog that he is, he trots up alongside her, wagging his tail and staring up at her.]

Hey, you new too?

[The lovely princess expects to see a person. She, however, is in for a bit of a surprise! Did that animal just...talk? You'll have to excuse Aurora; she's been reared in a land in which animals don't speak.]

H-hello there! [Aurora isn't certain as to whether or not it's the safest thing to attempt to give the dog a friendly pat on the head. She reaches out with a small, dainty hand, but pulls it back with uncertainty.]

You're correct - I've only just arrived here. [The girl doesn't know if he'll speak again. She doesn't feel at all embarrassed at talking to an animal, regardless, as it was a regular occurrence when she lived in the forest.]

[Balto put his ears back a little.]

[Aurora is still overcoming the shock, but she rests a hand on Balto's furry head and proceeds to scratch him behind the ears.]

Well, that makes two of us! [Now she's more enthusiastic. She continues with a soft chuckle and a smile.] I apologize if I seemed rude, but I've never had an animal speak to me before. [Well, unless you count the owl in the forest, whose response to everything was "Whoo? Whooo?"] My name is Rose, and I'm a student here, as well - it's lovely to meet you.

[Balto gives a pleased smile, leaning into the touch of her hand and wagging his tail without really noticing it.]

Nice to meet you too Rose. It's a little weird to have humans understand me, actually...we're all adjusting to new things I guess.

[The relief might not show in her musical voice, but Rose is more assuaged now that she's met someone that feels as out-of-place as she does. Thank goodness she's not the only one!]

Well, it seems that there are many people here, so I'm sure you'll get your practice, as far as conversation goes. [She says this with a shrug of her petite shoulders. Rose then props her trunk upright next to her, and kneels down in the dewey grass. She then tucks her skirt under her knees and sits back on her heels. After adjusting her headband, she pats the grass next to her, subtly asking for the friendly dog to join her. She was not going to command him to "sit!"]

I'm afraid I didn't quite catch your name. Did you come to the academy from nearby?

[Wow, this girl sure was friendly! Balto didn't mind that at all. He didn't feel quite as lost with someone being so...kind...he wasn't quite used to it, even with the recent turn of events in his life (a human being so nice, that is). He pads over to her, wagging his tail happily and sitting down more in front of her than next to her. What else was expected if they were gonna have a conversation?]

I'm Balto, from Nome in Northern Evangeline.

[Rose finds it adorable, and heart-warming, that Balto's joyfully wagging his tail and looking at her with large, happy eyes. She wants others to feel comfortable around her.]

Nome? Why, I've never heard of such a place! [She leans forward slightly, eyes wide with interest.] What's it like? And-forgive me if I'm intruding-but what brings you here?

No, not at all!

[A wide smile is on his face. He could definitely see being this gal's friend.]

Well, Nome is up in the north. It's always cold there and covered in snow...and we have the northern lights up there, and most people get around by dog sled. I pull one of them, lead dog.

[That sounds so different, yet so fantastic at the same time! This is one of the main reasons behind her coming to the academy - to learn new things about new people, and animals. However, she just can't imagine living someplace cold and snowy throughout the year, and it's written on her face!]

Wow, that sounds exciting! [Rose has heard of dog sleds, but she's never seen one, personally.] And the lead dog? [She notes how proud and excited Balto seems, and it's lovely. She reaches forward and ruffles the fur on the top of his head, giggling lightly as she does so.] My, my, sir, that sounds like quite an honor!

[If dogs could blush...]

Ha, thanks...it's my whole life, really. We run for races and professional stuff too, even in whiteout conditions sometimes...I wouldn't want to do anything else.

So, if you enjoy all of it so much [she's not trying to be rude, she's just befuddled.}, why come here? I mean, it seems very nice here, as well, but you speak so fondly of Nome.

[Something changes in his voice and appearance. He looks down a little, a sadness coming over him.]

The invitation said that they wanted me to help get rid of that black mist...so I came here to check it out...and if it's such a big deal...

I just don't want it to reach Nome, is all...so if I can help, then I will.

[The princess is deeply touched by Baltos dedication to his loved ones. She smiles and attempts to comfort him by stroking him gently on the top of his head.]

I truly admire your devotion to your homeland. There are humans I've read about that don't have so much courage as you do.
