[It wasn't over. Not really. The Mist might have moved but it wasn't gone. The Strangelings were still out there somewhere.

And, of course, they had to deal with the fall out from everything that had happened over the last few weeks.

Before she did anything else, Elisa had to get in contact with her loved ones in New York. Like everyone else in the Academy, she'd been waiting for news of the outside world with baited breath and a certain degree of fear. According to the news reports, there were hundreds - no, millions - of people missing. Although she knew that the clan would have stuck together, Mist or no Mist, the flame of hope that flickered in her chest was weak and insubstantial. It could be snuffed out all too easily.

It was late afternoon in Manhattan by the time she managed to get through. Probably because the lines were being jammed by the thousands of other people who were trying to track down their missing loved ones. The Clan were asleep but Matt assured her that everyone - the gargoyles, the mutates, her parents, Beth, her friends on the force - had pulled through. (Maybe the reporter had been right about people who stuck together.)

When she finally hung up the phone, with a great deal of reluctance and several promises to keep in touch, Elisa felt dizzy with relief. She sank back in her chair, gazing up at the ceiling as she tried to comprehend the news. She wanted to laugh. She wanted to cry. She wanted sunset to hurry up so she could share the good news with Goliath and Bronx.

In the mean time, she'd have to settle for starting the comprehensive security review that the Academy needed. Next time - unfortunately, the detective didn't doubt that there would be a next time - they'd have the equipment they needed.

If she had any say in the matter, they'd have a proper plan to go with it.]
