[When his comm crackled violently at him, Russell quickly shut it off and flung it across the room, then lifted his eyes to the TV, black and dead as the map that'd flickered on it moments before.

Mom and Dad were back home and Mr. Fredricksen and Dug and the other dogs--they were in the air. Would that be more dangerous, to be in the air in all this? And, oh God, Kevin and her babies in the jungle, were they safe, and his friends at the Academy--
He couldn't waste any more time worrying. The boy clenched his small fists to stop them from shaking and seized his bag, slinging it over his shoulder. He knew what to do. He'd memorized the pamphlets, gone through every last drill, even practiced a few escape plans on his own. With a deep breath Russell stormed out of his room. He was going to help. He was going to make sure nobody got left behind, starting with Jane.
He wasn't going to let some dumb mist stop a Wilderness Explorer, was he?]
