[That calm, easy drawl... reminds her of someone. She won't admit it, but the voice is the reason she responds, without hardly looking at the screen.
After all, she's trying to work... which she's half sneaking around to do. Doctor's orders are to take it easy, and, well. She considers not immediately hitting the gym to be following that.
Nothing hard about book work for her classes. Or catalog shopping for rifles next semester.
She focuses on the end part, about the afterlife. It's something she's thought long and hard about the last six months or so. Even moreso than before.]
I don't think there's any sort of afterlife. We live, we die. And that's the end of that.
[There's a small pause. He's a tad shocked at the abruptness of the answer. He wasn't exactly expecting something so direct, especially from a human.. Normally they're a bit more creative toward reality.]
Well, that's an awful to-the-point philosophy. I like it though. Thought the same way myself, for a long while, and it might still be the right way of lookin' at it...
There's actually two otha toys roamin' round the school like me. A doll n' a clown..
But we're all jus' normal toys. This here's the only place we're allowed to walk n' talk ta people, but all us toys are alive. We just don't show it, usually.
[He laughs again. Heartier, this time, more at ease.]
You've got us all wrong! We're toys, not spies.
What use would we have in usin' people's secrets to control 'em? We can't even talk to 'em, anyway! No, our reasons for "playin' dead" are much simpler than that.

[She's just looked at the screen. And seen the talking pink bear.
That takes her a moment to recover from. And she might still be a bit off in her replies.]
A lot of times.
The last time... laid me up for awhile. Lot of time to think.

I know that all too well. Prolly what got me thinkin' about this in the first place.

But she manages a smirk. She's more curious than mean in her tone.]
Are you actually a stuffed bear?
[Looks can be deceiving, after all.]

..What else would I be?
Reply
[A pause.]
Never seen a stuffed animal talk before.
[Or a mouse run a school. Or... most of the other things that happen here.]

[The Crystal could shock her. And so can this. She'll just... stare a little more at the screen.]

Drastic times, I s'pose.

Or are there only special circumstances where you come alive?
[Why is this important? ...It just is, okay?]

We're always alive, but we only walk n talk when no'ne else is around. 'Cept for here, we're allowed to talk to folks.

[That hasn't sent her paranoia into overdrive or anything.]
So.
You hear everything. See everything.
But never think to tell people that they don't have the privacy they think they do.
[Thinking about everything said and done in front of her childhood toys? And her brothers' toys?
...Maybe.]

Indeed we do. Secrecy is what we're best at.. I'm sure some toys've got a lotta stories ta tell.
But it's nothin' to worry about, it's not like we would.. or could tell anyone 'bout these secrets.

That's what secrecy is all about. Knowing when to wait and when to strike.
