"If Only the World Wouldn't Get In the Way..." 1 anonymous November 14 2016, 23:24:25 UTC
It brought back memories to him, bittersweet as the present, sneaking out in the stillness of the night while Chief, the hunter Amos Slade, Widow Tweed, and everyone else was sound asleep the night of the spring day that Copper came back. Now he was adding his so-called mate Vixey to the equation of 'everyone else being sound asleep', the admittedly beautiful but too chatty/flighty-for-his-taste/liking vixen currently snuggled up cozy as you please back in 'their' new den while her 'mate' was slipping away through the forest to fully clear up loose ends.
It wasn't just 'cold feet' the reason that Tod was sneaking out/away into the stillness of night, though. He'd heard through the grapevine that despite his former caretaker Widow Tweed's careful nursing of him, Amos Slade had succumbed to the trap-wound in his leg after having gained an infection. Copper (and Chief, he made himself think) was now ownerless, and despite any odds between Tod the fox and Slade the hunter, the latter HAD *taken care of Copper since he was a little puppy*; had quite possibly even *LOVED* him, despite Copper's (AND *Chief's*) mainly being to him a *HUNTING dog*. Tod not only wanted to *COMPLETELY clear the air* between himself and Copper, -he wanted to offer his sincere condolences to his very best friend forever.
-
Chief, oddly enough, was *NOWHERE* to be seen when Tod slipped into the front yard through the rail-fence gaps, and Copper *was NOT* tied to his sleeping barrel, -but the fox put those two thoughts out of his head upon seeing that the mixed-breed hound was crying; softly/quietly, but crying nonetheless. And he seemed not only *COMPLETELY* HEARTBROKEN, but also as though he were left *ALL* *alone* *with-OUT* *a friend in the world*. WHAT could have *caused* such a thing??!
*WELL*- Tod Rooney Tweed was *going to find out*...!

Copper Kurt Slade looked *SO miserable* that Tod stopped his deja-vu and made his silent way all the way up to his canine best friend, gently nudging his smaller black nose against Copper's tear-wet golden-brown-furred cheek before just as gently nuzzling it. As he did so, he couldn't help but whimper a little himself at how SO *VERY* *sad* Copper looked and was, lovingly rubbing one of his slightly fluffier/softer gingery-red cheeks against Copper's damp face.
At the feel of soft, thick, fluffy, FAMILIAR-SMELLING fur rubbing itself against his tear-soaked/stained cheek, and the sound of a *familiar WHIMPERING* in his ear that was sad yet genuinely sympathetic, Copper's sobs suddenly stopped themselves short, and he gasped/choked a little bit on them as he slowly-yet-quickly raised his floppy-earred head. Saddened husky-blue puppy-dog eyes met with and locked onto kindly dark amber orbs set within a familiar (handsome/beautiful) sharp gingery-red/cream fox face topped with large pointed dark brown ears. "T- To- ...*Tod*??!" Copper exclaimed in a choked-out gasp of a whisper, not being to help himself shaking a little as his cobalt eyes filled with cloudy heart-wrenching grief began to take on just a small hint of hopeful, joyous sunshine at seeing his beloved best friend again.
Said fox smiled kindly at the hound, waving his bushy white-tipped tail around. "Hiya, Copper! -Yeah; *it's ME*, again." Then the usually joyous and mischievously-playful young vulpine's expression turned serious as he said softly, "...I heard through the game-preserve forest grapevine that your owner Amos Slade recently passed on due to an infection in his injured leg despite Widow Tweed's taking the utmost care of him. I- I decided to come and make sure that you and Chief-,"
At the sound of his elder wolf-hound mentor's name, Copper suddenly released a *heart-SHATTERED* whine that made Tod's very soul hurt and his own eyes prick wetly with tears. Despite Tod's not really liking the elder dog and having been chased by him so many times, he knew that Copper loved him very much, and looked to the wolf-hound as a father/uncle-figure; the *ONLY one* of such he'd had since very young puppyhood. He felt a cold shadow fall over his heart as he stuttered while stumbling back a little, "H-He- He... *NO*, HE *didn't*-,"
"*He DID*," countered Copper tearfully, blinking hard. "Just a minute or two after Amos passed, ...so did- *he*, he loved him THAT *MUCH*."
"Leaving YOU *ALL* *alone*?" said Tod quietly, actually (not) a bit angry at Chief. "W-Well, -*WHAT'll* you do NOW, Copper?? You *CAN'T* just STAY *here* all by yourself; NOT *really*-!"
Copper shuffled his light-colored paws a little as he inquired apprehensively yet bashfully, fearing that he would be told outright '*NO*', "Could- Could I- ....Could I possibly come back *with YOU*, Tod? I've *REALLY* MISSED you an *awful lot*."
Despite having a 'mate' to contend with, Tod wasted no time whatsoever in joyfully replying before happily licking Copper's face (accidentally getting at his lips in the process), "-ABSTIVELY *posolutely* *CERTAINLY* *of COURSE* you can/may, Copper Kurt Slade!!! I'VE *missed YOU* like *CRAZY*, *too*!!"
