Wood shavings fell in soft piles on the table as he carved out a dainty smile for the puppet with small, gentle strokes. He set his knife down, and blew the dust out from it's face. The man looked at the marionette's head piece, and then set it down with a sigh, onto the discard table with the rest of the rejects.

He couldn't place what was wrong, but knew that there was something missing. Usually his hands could create, make faces and bodies with personalities, as if life could be breathed into them, perfect subjects for the television show. But something about her eyes, the smile, was off, and the wood beneath his hands was stiff and empty.

He left his study and walked down the hall to his daughter's room with a tired weight in his steps, the walls bruised with peeling paint, and opened the door with a quiet creak. Ellie was running around with her favorite pair of goggles, and gave him an almost perfected look of guilt when she spotted her father in the doorway.

"Aren't you supposed to be in bed?" He smiled at her, and she hopped under the covers before he could say another word. When she decided that he didn't look too upset, she gave him a wide grin.

"I made a new friend today, dad! We went on an adventure, an' we--"

He let her weave her stories, then shushed her and tucked the blanket under her chin. He picked out a small book of old tales from the bookshelf next to the bed, scuffed binding and the spine almost falling apart from the loving use of generations, and flipped it open to his daughter's favorite story, about Scotland and bears and an archer princess named Merida.

And after his daughter was put to sleep, her stories of adventure mixed in his head alongside the tales of her favorite book, and his hands suddenly knew the face and attitude to carve into his puppet.

He grabbed a new block of wood, his tools, and red yarn.

His cowgirl would be adventurous, strong and free.

OP here.

Thank you so much for filling my prompt! This fill was lovely!

Jessie's my favourite character and I love her (and my main fandom is Toy Story), so her inclusion made me happy! And her ancestors, even though she's a toy (spiritual ancestors, then), are Merida and Ellie. And that's just wonderful.

I just love that Jessie's toy creator was Ellie's dad! And that Merida is a story that Ellie loves. And that this takes place on the day that Ellie met Carl!

And I love the line His cowgirl would be adventurous, strong and free. so much. It captures Jessie's character while also describing Merida and Ellie too. And shows the care and love that went into creating her.

Thank you again! :) <3
