Oh. So that was it. The King was trying to make sure Flynn Rider didn’t get anymore involved with his daughter than he already was. It was a bit of a slap in the face, really. Of course, Eugene didn’t want any money. All he wanted was Rapunzel. Now, tomorrow, forever. He couldn’t be paid to stay away from her. All the guards in Corona and in the world couldn’t possibly stop him from seeing her. Well, maybe they could, but that certainly didn’t mean Eugene wasn’t going to die trying.
“I don’t want your money.” Eugene stated as slowly and as clearly as he could possibly could. He didn’t want to insult the King, who could very easily make sure he never saw Rapunzel again, but he also wanted his intentions to be clear. “No amount of money or crowns could you possibly pay me to stay away from Rapunzel. Your Highness, I know I’m obviously not your first pick as a suitor for Rapunzel, but I’m in love with her. There’s nothing you could offer me or say to me to change my mind about that. There’s not much in the world that I’m 100% sure about, the one thing I’m absolutely certain is I am inexplicably in love with your daughter.”
The King arched a bushy eyebrow and studied Eugene for a few moments, which to Eugene, felt like a lifetime. He tried his hardest to look as innocent and un-thief-y as possible.
To his surprise, the King broke out into a huge smile.
“I just had to be sure.”
Eugene was floored. Sure? Sure of what? What was he sure of? Was he sure he was going to throw Eugene out of the palace? Or just the opposite? Or..what? Eugene was pretty sure that the King had intentions of letting him stay.
“I want to marry your daughter.”
The words escaped his mouth before he could even catch them. He didn’t regret what he said; he knew he wanted to marry Rapunzel. He didn’t want anyone else but her. But he probably should’ve waited and let her father, the King, warm up to him a bit more.
The King’s smile waived and then fell. Eugene felt his heart instantly sink. The King exhaled loudly and smacked his lips a few times, though the noise only seemed to make their verbal silence even more loud.
“Well, she does seem very smitten with you..” the King began to wander aloud. “I think…I think I’m going to leave it up to her.”
Much to nobody’s surprise, a few months later, Eugene Fitzherbert married Rapunzel.
