She stirred the pot of soup while checking the window for any lights in the distance. She didn’t like it when they were late like this, the cold winter months meant the hours of sunlight were few and food was scarce. Just the thought of some lone wolf in search of a meal coming across one of them… She shuddered as she checked on the food again, lighting some more candles and checking the lantern she had hung by the door. There was no way they could pass the house now, not when she had it lit up like the sun itself.
She sat down on her chair, the one they had built for her a few birthdays back; she had gotten too big for their chairs. And this dress, which she had sown herself from the fabric they had gotten her. She smiled as she remembered the look on their faces when she had finished it. These last couple of years had gone by in a flash. Ever since the hunter let her go she didn’t as much as think of the queen. The dwarves had been so good to her, given her a home, a family. They made her feel loved and wanted, something she had never experienced like that before.
They had fallen into a comfortable routine; they worked from Monday to Friday but made sure to always be home for dinner. On Saturday they played music, went on long walks in the forest or played games. Sunday they would relax and sleep in, they would help her cook or she would read to them. When one of them was feeling sick she would take care of them while the others went off to work. They would take their diamonds to the market and would come back with whatever she requested, not that she requested much, except for their safe return.
She was startled from her thoughts when a catchy whistle could be heard over the hill. She smiled as she dusted off her skirt and went to open the door. There they were, her boys. Once inside they each kissed her on the cheek before going to wash their hands and sitting down as she scooped a bowl full for all of them. She listened as they told her about their day and showed her the diamonds they had collected. Grumpy offered making her another necklace which she declined happily, touching the heavy diamond pendent around her neck. Doc asked her if there were any books he could bring her from the market tomorrow and Dopey offered her a book to read to them before bed. She smiled at the boys while she thought: “I’ve never felt like more of a princess, than right now.”
