she woke up, or something, she didn't know, to the one face she never wanted to see again. "do you even know how much i hate you?"
"whoa whoa whoa. whoa. is that any way to talk to the guy who single-handedly plucked you out of tartarus? not to mention made you young and hot again?" hades smiled down at her, his favourite minion.
she smiled back with no humour at all, no light in her eyes. "try not to objectify me."
"but megara." he moved behind her, placed his hands on her shoulders and trailed them all the way down to her hands. he held her. "what else am i supposed to do with my property?"
"i'm not your--"
"your soul came back to me, darling." he lifted her hand to his mouth and almost kissed it before she yanked it back. "i could have let it drown with all the others, but i particularly liked it when i possessed it more...intimately."
"stop talking like that."
"okay, okay, just let me talk like this a second: persephone's up on olympus for a while. how about you're my replacement queen?"
she crossed her arms and jutted out one hip, so easily like she used to. "i'm no queen of the underworld."
he smirked and he grabbed her chin and kissed her like she hadn't been kissed in years, breathlessly, fearlessly, neither of them afraid she was too delicate, that she might snap in half. she pulled away and pressed two fingers to his lips, making sure she was really here, she was alive, in some way.
"now you are," he said nipping her finger with his sharp, strange teeth.
she lowered her eyebrows but somehow, not even her fingers, she didn't move. "i still hate you."
Thank you for filling! I adore your style, particularly concerning anything Hercules, which you seem to be fond of. I love how you included facets of the less-than-Disney version(hints at a Zeus who has a casual attitude towards monogamy, Persephone), and I can't wait to see what you do with it.
Re: "eternity" (2/?)planesandcranesJuly 1 2011, 00:10:56 UTC
honestly, i haven't even replied to your last comment because i wasn't sure how because it was too nice and now this! just! thank you so much! thank you so incredibly! your comments mean the world to me, you're just TOO KIND. <3
just something like a disclaimer here: the idea that persephone actually really likes being with hades isn't something i made up all on my own, it was actually inspired by a fanfic i read quite some time ago, called "hope springs eternal: a subterranean romance," which is pretty much as perfect as fanfic can get, holy geez. it's amazing. anyway, this persephone is all mine, in fact, i was going to make her a bit closer to myth/other fanfic, but she just wouldn't shut up, and suddenly she'd become someone of her own accord. you go, underworld-queen! assert yourself!
**
"hi, um, hercules."
he looked up. he'd been...doing nothing, really. just watching the clouds float across the sky. and to think he had forever to do this. he sighed, and for the first time, got a good look at persephone. she was luminous, and so lovely, with emerald eyes and such pink lips. she smiled nervously, then without warning, sat herself down next to hercules, the cloud bouncing a little under her excited, and not as elegant as he'd imagined she'd be, movements.
"there are so many things to do up here, it's just like, how can you ever make your way through them all?" she laughed as he stared at her, her voice high and incredibly clear. "i'm kidding. obviously. believe it or not, i actually prefer the underworld. is that crazy? it's probably crazy."
oh. oh. she was--
"anyway, i could probably help you if you want."
"i-i don't know," he said, realizing this was the first time he'd said anything, though she'd already talked a lot. "i think it'll probably just take some time..."
"no, no!" she shook her head frantically, her green eyes giant. "you misunderstand! i mean, we could escape! to the underworld. i'm sure there's something we could do, come on, hades would do practically anything for me--"
"thanks a lot, persephone, i mean it, but what would happen if i got her back? i'd just have to go through it all again, and...and i mean, i can't just keep losing her again and again, can i?"
"hmmmm. yeah. that would totally suck, wouldn't it? yeah, i understand. i have to lose hades like that too! it's terrible!"
"oh, so...so you really like hades?"
"of course i do! i mean, i can see how you wouldn't like him, and with good reason, but he -- he's really sweet! he loves me, like, as much as my mom does, but he doesn't suffocate me like she does. he's gentler about it, believe it or not. and it helps that i'm not the only thing going on in his life, you know? i'm more like a special treat, instead of something he just devours all the -- oh, this is sounding weird. i'm sorry. but, yeah, i really miss him when i'm up here. and i just hate knowing i've left him behind."
"do you think meg feels like that too?"
"probably, i mean, i don't know if she feels anything anymore, but if she does, it's probably like, terribly guilty, knowing you'd really miss her when she's gone."
"i miss her so much."
she hummed a little, and patted him on the hand. he flinched at first, but he looked in her big, bright eyes and knew he could probably trust her.
even when they'd first met, meg had been a few years older than him. this was his first time, really, talking with someone his own age, who had the same nervous and jumbled way of thinking he did. though she was very, very pretty, he didn't see her in that way. he saw her as maybe someone who could be a friend, and right now that couldn't be a bad thing.
no excuse for leaving olympus would have been satisfied persephone's mother, and hercules wasn't sure what kind he could use, either. he had no one to visit on earth anymore, his foster parents and phil long gone. and he wasn't really a celebrity down there anymore, just another deity. instead of asking him for his autograph, now people visited him in the temples, asking his statues, mostly, to keep the ones they loved close to them.
after they'd heard of what he'd done for meg -- that seemed so long ago now -- he'd become, for the humans, some sort of symbol of everlasting love. they'd beg him to stop their lover from leaving, to keep them together forever.
there wasn't much he could do for them anyway, but maybe, he thought, they just weren't meant to have forever. sure, they could have whatever time forever allowed them, they could spend their whole lives together if they tried, but eventually one of them could go. he guessed that on earth there was no such thing as eternity.
"do you really think we should be doing this?"
"yeah, of course! as long as we get back before anyone notices we're gone, don't want mom to start another drought--"
"no, i mean...what if we're intruding on something? like destiny? all i want is to tell meg, you know, i still love her and i'll always think about her even though i'll have to spend my life without her for forever..."
persephone wrinkled her nose at him. "you know, you talk almost as much as i do sometimes. but anyway, you've never had a problem barging in on destiny before, have you?"
the first time hercules entered the underworld, he'd been so overcome with -- everything he could have possibly been overcome with, that he didn't really pay much attention to it as a place. now, though, he was trying so hard to drown out his own thoughts that he should not be doing this, that this was a bad, bad idea, that he tried to soak in everything. the sudden chill that struck him, the way the wind must have felt for meg, like knives on his skin. he looked up and saw what looked like icicles, dripping something. he didn't know what it was, really, but it felt like despair. it was so dark he couldn't see where he was going, but persephone held his hand, pulling him along, as she was "the official guide to the underworld, though i'll save you the spiel."
she'd winked at him, and he'd known in that moment why hades loved her. she brought something bright to the darkest corner of the world, she had a warmth and a wonderful fearlessness that made hercules want to try not to be afraid too.
meg had been that for him. for her, he would be anything, he'd become someone who didn't know fear if she needed it, he would become indestructible. with her, no place was lonely and he was limitless, and she'd given him eternity and here he was because he couldn't share it with her, and that's all he wanted in all the worlds.
"okay, now we're approaching the main event -- ah! i can't believe i'm doing this! okay! we're almost at hades' throne!"
and there it was, there he was, his chin in his hand, drumming his fingers on his knee, looking bored and impatient. he didn't scare hercules, not really. he was smart, and good with words, but he was snivelling and kind of weak when it mattered. hercules wondered what he was waiting for.
persephone squeezed hercules' hand, then let go and ran to hades, jumping onto his lap and throwing her arms around his neck.
"baby!" he yelled, a cool blue flame spreading over his body. he was about to say something else, but instead he let her lips capture his.
hercules wasn't sure he'd be able to watch this, so he started to turn around, ready to search for meg wherever he could, when she walked up to hades with a goblet held out to him and an annoyed, overworked look on her face. she looked just she did the day he met her.
hades pushed her hand away, his eyes not leaving persephone. "not now, sweetheart. i've found something sweeter to suck on."
meg rolled her eyes, and pushed one of her heavy curls out of her face, and then her hand dropped to her side. her face went blank, then she took a deep breath and broke into a smile so big he thought his heart was going to burst. she was so beautiful.
hades finally noticed him, but he didn't care, he was home, as she said, "is wonderboy here for real?"
she wanted nothing more than to run to him. she wanted to fling herself at him and hold onto him and never let go, to kiss him fearlessly and forever.
but she stood still.
this body was not hers. she wasn't sure exactly what it was, but she knew it was some sort of vessel, something hades conjured up and kept her in so he could keep her around, and she didn't know if anyone else could touch it. hercules could touch her and she could dissolve, she could disappear, she could leave him all over again and break him apart, and she couldn't do that.
she wanted to kiss him with everything she had, but she couldn't bear to see him. he wasn't supposed to be here.
"i'm here," he answered her, and she knew what he sounded like when he was trying to be brave.
"isn't this adorable," hades said, his little squeeze sitting on the end of his knee, looking at hercules. "and all too familiar. this time, though, you're not getting her back." he shrugged. "it's an impossibility."
"i just wanted to see her again."
that was what broke her heart in half. he was so honest, even face-to-face with death himself, he always spoke the simplest of words, the most straightforward, and the most real. he couldn't hide anything.
she'd always wished she could be more like him.
"i wanted to see you too," she said, walking to him slowly, so scared hades would snap his fingers and she'd be gone forever again. she just wanted to be next to hercules. "wonderboy," she smiled at him so he could see her smile, "you've proven yourself unforgettable."
she stood a safe distance from him, seeing how hard he was fighting reaching out to touch her. he knew hades, so he probably sensed something was up, that she was not supposed to be like this, that she should be swimming with the other souls.
"i don't know what i am," she said before she thought about it. "i'm scared."
she'd never said that before. not as her bones cracked beneath her skin, or when she couldn't stop shaking even when she wasn't cold. not when she couldn't get up from bed, when she could hardly lift her head, not when it hurt to blink. she'd been human then, shed been able to reach out and touch her husband, to hold him in her arms, or, as the case often was, to let him hold her, and he'd always been there for her. she'd been his.
but she belonged to someone else now, and she didn't know what, if anything, she could do in this body that was not hers. suddenly, she couldn't stop saying it. "i'm scared."
hercules lifted his hand, stretching his arm across the small distance between them. she steeled herself, knowing she may shatter, and pressed her palm to his.
holy geez, i'm sorry! i'm so late! i had to travel for a family emergency, and a lot of things just happened. HOWEVER, i've totally finished this! and though it's probably not even two thousand words, it's the most i've written since nanowrimo 2009, so THANK YOU. i hope you like it. (:

persephone had never seen anyone like megara. truthfully, though, she hated to admit, she didn't know many people at all, so maybe everyone fascinated her, but megara fascinated her.
she could see why hades liked her so much.
she was so calm and cool, the way she held herself; standing up straight enough that she held her head high, but with her hands on her hips and a face that read bored out of her freakin' mind.
but when she saw hercules...she changed, and it was alarming and strange how head-first and honestly she showed him what she was thinking, even with just her eyes. i thought i'd never see you again. i missed you so much. i love you.
"her body, like..." persephne looked up at hades, hating that she had to ask him this, for so many reasons. "it can't leave the underworld, can it? it won't work up there."
"it absolutely won't," he said, leaning back in his throne, letting them have their little moment, she guessed. he loves this -- owning people, controlling them. sometimes she wondered how she even grew to love him, when he practically picked her up without her permission. well, he was sweet. and so lonely. "she's all mine. i've got her soul, just like before, but now i have her body too. a one-of-a-kind underworld exclusive."
she looked over at megara, not quite human, and hercules, her friend from mount olympus. they weren't listening. they were aware of nothing but each other, she could tell, holding each other so lightly, still disbelieving, overwhelmed. this place could do that to you.
"i realize, probably, you actually do want to make hercules suffer after defeating you so spectacularly, you know, by possessing his lover's immortal soul down here while he has to live forever on olympus--"
"babe, does this little speech serve any purpose besides mocking me?"
"sort of. i mean, look at them. they're meant to be together, come on, they've defeated death before, right? and i'm not saying they should do it again, nope, no way, but...we got to be together in the end, sort of, didn't we?"
he pulled her closer by her waist, tickling her because he knew how to, and smirked. "what, are you saying this is the end?"
"nope," she said, laughing as he kissed her neck. "no way."
he smiled up at persephone. "i've been waiting eight months for this." he looked at his cloud-castle one last time, for a while, anyway. he'd be back, though, sooner than he'd like, and it'd be the same as always.
"i have to apologize, like usual, for the kinds of chores hades is gonna make you perform, and the outfits..." she rolled her eyes. the black leather costumes were pretty awful, but hercules didn't really mind pouring hades' pomegranate juice or filing his monthly reports (persephone helped, at least). "but it won't be all bad, right?"
he shook his head, smiling in the last of the sunlight. on earth the leaves had all changed their colours and were now turning the ground into a red-yellow-orange mosaic that he looked down at, briefly. the sun set and everything was gold. "not at all."
**
even gods, he guessed now, didn't really get eternity. up in the clouds he watched everything on earth change, the flowers wilting and the leaves growing brown and golden. people still prayed to him, asking him for forever, and he prayed for them, that eternity would lend them the most it could. he was lucky enough to get his pieces of eternity; a winter each year in the darkest, coldest corner of the universe with the only woman he figured he'd ever love. and she loved him fearlessly, invincibly, for those four months, holding him tight and kissing him constantly with a sparkle in her eyes that he supposed now would last forever.

Lovely! I absolutely love your style, and you're quite identifiable by the non-capitalization quirk ;)
At the very end I was reminded of how Hercules in Greek Mythology did actually half live in the underworld and half on Olympus, because he was half god. It rather works, doesn't it?

thank you so much for all your sweet, sweet reviews! they really made my day. (:
i had to lol about the non-capitalization thing because it's like...i know it looks unprofessional and i want to fix it but...i just think it's weird how much bigger the capital letters are than all the others! i'm so strange! :p
and...i didn't even think of that...that's so cool! thank you for reminding me! i absolutely love your username as well, athena is my favourite. (:
