The Beard: Part 1 anonymous August 20 2011, 06:35:06 UTC
It all began when Belle, still drowsy in the aftermath of lovemaking, absently ran a hand over Adam's cheek and remarked, "When I touch you, sometimes I'm surprised when I don't feel fur."

He lay awake all night; what in God's name had she meant by that? True, when Belle first began to love him, he'd been a Beast, covered in fur from head to paw, but surely she didn't prefer him that way. But...what if she did? Or what if she just liked the way his cheek felt covered with hair?
Either way, during the next morning's toilet, Adam pointedly set aside his shaving set without using it.

It took about a week before he noticed any results, and about two before Belle gave Adam a hard look, trying to figure out what was different.

The third week, Adam looked into the mirror to inspect his progress and gasped in horror; his beard was coming in finally, but it looked awful. The fine hairs forming his moustache were longer on one side than the other, his cheeks appeared to be covered with a patchwork quilt of fuzz, and his chin looked bizarre with only five prominent whiskers sticking in all directions.

"It's hopeless!" he cried before storming out of the bathroom and blowing past his hairdresser, who'd come to assess the situation.

Meanwhile, Belle was waiting by the palace doors, picnic basket in hands.

After thirty minutes of waiting, she gave up and went to the library, where she was shocked to find her husband there, his face buried in his hands. Without a word, she picked up a book from the stacks around him.

"Adam," she asked, confusion wrinkling her nose, "why are you reading about fashion?"

Adam raised his face from his hands, revealing his horribly patchy beard.

"Have you ever seen a Russian before?" he asked. "Their beards are thick enough to rival my old fur! Nothing like this pathetic excuse for a beard..."

"Oh, THAT'S what you're doing!" Belle exclaimed, trying to bite back her laughter. "I'd thought you'd fired your barber."

"No, of course not...although I think he may be angry with me."
Belle took his hand.

"What made you decide to grow a beard?" She ran a hand over his cheek and struggled to repress the smile from feeling its odd roughness.

"I...I was afraid you liked me better as the Beast," he admitted, pulling his hand from hers and burying his face again.

She couldn't help laughing now; oh, how she loved this man! How different he was now, so sweet in his desire to make her happy!

"Why would I like you better as a beast?" she gasped between giggles.

"Sometimes you still call me 'Beast...'" he said, looking at her accusingly.

"It's a pet name," she said, folding her arms in equal mock-anger, "and you know it. Adam, I love you. I loved you as a beast, and I love you as a man." Her eyes crinkled with another giggle. "Even if you do have the most atrocious excuse for a beard growing on your cheeks right now."

Adam sighed, smiled, and kissed her. "I'll send for Feuilly and be cleanshaven within the hour."

Belle put out a hand to stop him.

"Excuse me, but you're an hour late for a picnic." She quirked an eyebrow. "And the sun sets in two hours, so we'd better use the daylight while we can."

When the two came back at sunset, Belle's cheeks were glowing fiery red--and so was her chin.
