Esmerelda shook her head at this, her earring glinting in the moonlight again. “No! No, of course not. I’m always happy to see you, birthday or no birthday. Phoebus couldn’t make it because he had a meeting with the city guards. He said he may come around tomorrow, though - he wishes you a happy birthday.” Quasimodo wouldn’t mind seeing Phoebus once more, but he didn’t hold a place in the bell ringer’s heart like Esmerelda did - and Quasimodo had not quite gotten over his jealousy of him; he was pretty sure he never would.
The gypsy stepped forward, taking both of his hands in hers, her thumbs running over the back of Quasi’s hands soothingly. Her voice still had that edge of apology to it. “I didn’t bring you anything.” Quasi blinked at her, noticing the frown on her face, the look in her eyes as if saying that she didn’t do enough to keep Quasimodo for a friend - like she didn’t deserve him.
That wasn’t true at all.
When Esmerelda stared into his eyes, Quasi felt his cheeks grow hot, not being used to receiving this sort of attention. One of her hands reached up and touched the side of his face, tracing down to cup his chin. She leaned forward, pressing her lips against his, and for a moment Quasi forgot how to breathe. When she leaned away the bell ringer felt his heart beating wildly, his skin tingling. He smiled, and when she leaned in again he pressed back this time.
Esmerelda was wrong when she said that she didn’t bring him anything, for she did bring him something and gave it to him a long time ago - her unwavering love. And that was the best present that Quasimodo had ever been given.
