Okay this is my first fill, so I hope I'm going about this the right way. Also, since the OP wanted the pull string to be a major plot point, I kept them as toys...just anatomically correct toys. So try to suspend your disbelief briefly. ;) Okay, on with the story.
-----
Buzz first noticed it while he was watching Woody help the other toys prepare for vacation. He was strutting around the room, the natural leader, just like he'd done back in Andy's room.
"Okay everybody! Tomorrow's the big day! Everyone that was chosen needs to make sure that they are ready to be packed when Bonnie gets home from school. Does everyone have fresh batteries? All of their extra pieces? Okay, good. I'm going to double check everything one last time."
He did another walk around the room, stopping to help Mr. Pricklepants with a loose button. And that's when it happened. Rex walked up, worrying aloud about Bonnie's new sand toys, and how she'd like them better. He tried to get Woody's attention, but when the protests didn't turn his head, he grabbed the ring on his back and gave a slight tug.
"Woody! I don't think you understand the severity of the situation! What if she likes her new toys better? What if she forgets me and I get left on the beach?"
Buzz had only seen it because he was paying attention. Everyone else had missed it in the commotion, but the second Rex let go of the pull string, an almost shudder rippled it's way through Woody's entire body. The cowboy had done his best to conceal it, but Buzz could tell how agitated he was. He could see Woody struggling to even out his breaths as he stood there reassuring Rex that Bonnie wouldn't have chosen to take him if she didn't really love him.
