The melody in Purcell's Rondo is also used in a variety of compositions - most notably by Benjamin Britten in his Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra, where it is treated in a Theme and Variations form.
He is known for Opera, Dido and Aeneas and Fairy Queen being masterpieces of the genre - and this aria When I am laid in earth, is chilling and heartbreaking.
