What to do what to do....

I think I need to start freelance writing. Seriously. I mean, if I succeed, yay extra income that is most welcome! If I fail well, at least I am still writing. It just makes me uncomfortable. I mean, first of all I have no idea what I am doing. No idea where to start. Yeah I could just hop onto a site and hope for the best but...I feel like ( Read more... )

I took a course on children's literature, and it really isn't as simple as that professor seems to think it is. Since you're writing faerie tales for children, I'm sure you know that already. I actually think it's great that you're writing children's books. Children's literature is extremely valuable and important.

Sometimes people think that early childhood educators are just babysitters, and that their job is so easy, which irritates me because there is a LOT of work that goes into teaching young children. (The same thing goes for teachers of all age groups, regarding the amount of effort that goes into their jobs.) Even when I was a nanny I didn't just sit around and do nothing--a lot of work went into that too. I think there are just certain careers/jobs that society is taught to look down on, which sucks. I have a friend who always thought being a teacher was so easy until she did an externship where she taught high school students about law. Then she started to learn about all the behind-the-scenes work that goes into teaching, and she started to develop some respect for the profession.

Sorry for the rant. I just don't like it when people have that kind of attitude about stuff when they don't know anything about children's books/teaching/etc. Do what you want to do and what makes you happy.

Yeah, child care and education is tough. I think the people who undervalue/estimate those professions are people who never had to look after their own children for very long when they were little. I don't think they realize how much the people and things around children influence their lives so much. Eric says that most professors in the sciences are so busy working that they put their children into childcare a lot. So I would not put it past his professor to simply NOT understand at all. Honestly, I think it really threw her to find out that I had a BA in writing and I decided to write for children instead of adults. Man, I hope getting a PhD doesn't effect Eric like that...he tends to see things as they really are which is nice.
