Adam was in shock; just yesterday he had been worried about some girl he barely knew, now he wasn’t even sure if he would see his parents alive again.
The doctors hadn’t told him anything except to rest and they’ll see what they can find out.
The last thing he could remember was the screech of their minivan and a sharp pain erupting just bellow his ribs.
Groaning he lifted his head as one of the nurses came in.
“How are you Adam?” she asked him gently trying to distract him from the beeping sounds of the machines.
“Fabulous” He answered sarcastically. He attempted to sit up but the nurse pushed him back down firmly telling him not to get ahead of himself. He noticed she had a thick Scottish accent, something he’d usually be interested in but now it only added to his distress.
Already disliking this nurse Adam shoved her away angrily and cried out as pain shot down his chest into his bandaged midriff.
Tears sprung to his eyes and he wiped them away hastily as soon as the pain subsided.
“You should take it easy for a few days there darling, you won’t help your parents by putting yourself in even more pain”
At the mention of his parents, worry threatened to burst through Adams stomach and he puked over the side of the hospital bed.
The next day Adam awoke to the sound of footsteps on the outside corridor he peered around the hospital bleary eyed, wondering why he was here…
Then it all flooded back.
Cautiously he slowly lifted himself up trying not to irritate his injuries, they didn’t hurt as much but wasn’t about to forget yesterdays pain anytime soon.
To his relief he managed to sit up properly without any serious pain, he took a few minutes to clear his head before devising a plan.
Adam was sure of one thing, he was sick of not knowing how his parents were, for all he knew they could be dead. The thought of never seeing them alive again hurt him more than physical pain ever could. Swallowing his tears, Adam turned himself sideways and began to slide down the bed until his feet touched the cold floor. He tenderly tested the strength of his legs before deciding he would have to move slowly until they were used to the weight.
Taking a deep breath, Adam took his first step and nearly fell over as the world wobbled in front of his eyes he gritted his teeth and closed his eyes until the dizzy spell faded into a faint feeling of nausea.
“This is gonna be hard” he whispered and took another step.
Kera sat in her sisters’ hospital room; she had gotten a call from her mother when she got home from school.
She remembered entering the room earlier that day, seeing her Schenades’ unconscious body almost completely covered in white blankets and tubes connected to machines.
Kera wiped away her tears with a shaky hand trying to block out her mothers’ sobs from the other side of the door. She was glad Schenade wasn’t awake to hear her mother break down like this it would freak her out more than anything that the doctor said.
True, the doctors weren’t completely sure it was leukemia again but Kera had learnt to expect the worst over the years.
She slapped her shaking hand and decided to have a break from sitting by her sisters’ bedside.
She quietly crept out the door where she spotted her mum wiping tears in one of the waiting chairs.
“Mum, I’m going to get something to eat from the cafeteria” she whispered gently removing $10 from her mothers’ purse.
She barely noticed her mothers’ sad nods as she spotted a group of girls from her school.
Usually she wouldn’t even bother trying to talk to them, obviously they were part of the cool crowd as Stacy Murdock was in the center of the super sonic voiced gossipers who strangely looked like blown up Barbies. Still this was Keras’ territory and she was curious about why they were here.
“Hey Stacy” she mumbled half heartedly, just being around these girls made her feel unglamorous and ugly.
To her surprise Stacy actually acknowledged her existence with a response
“Hello…short person” Kera blushed, she always had hated being short and felt even more so next to the tall cheerleader wearing heels. Stacy flicked her hair and continued: “So I suppose you’re here to see Adam? But then, why would you even think you had a chance with him…” she giggled and the surrounding Barbies followed queue.
Kera decided to ignore the insult “Actually, I’m here because my sisters very sick and might die” She stared Stacy in the eye challenging her to make a joke.
Instead the cheerleader placed a sympathetic hand on Keras’ shoulder and said, “I knew you wouldn’t be stupid enough to think-“ but she didn’t finish as she spotted Adam slowly making his way to the reception desk.
Stacy smiled and pushed past Kera calling out “Adam over here!!!”
