My new craft obsession is Amigurumi! That's the Japanese art of crocheting animals or people, usually with large heads and varying degrees of awesomeness.
I didn't know how to crochet. I got some supplies and a few books for Christmas but for some reason I just couldn't figure it out. Plus, I wasn't that interested in crocheting blankets. I actually don't care for the feel of crochet blankets, they don't keep me warm. I have two crochet afghans that were made for me by relatives that are no longer alive so I have kept them. One was given to me when I was a child by my Grandma LeTourneau and the other when I went away to college from an Aunt. The one from college is still nice, it's pink and black and some other neat colors.
Anyway, I was not interested in blankets and I have several knitted scarves (because that's all I can knit!) so I wasn't interested in scarves. So I just left crochet alone.
Until I found Amigurumi on Pinterest! I did start obsessively pinning stuff!
Then I found some good websites with videos. I can learn better from a video! I learned the basic stitches, which actually aren't that hard. People who can crochet have told me it's not hard. Once you can figure it out, it's not hard!
I started with just practicing the stitches. Then I learned how to make a ball. The ball is the main part of amigurumi since the animals or characters are usually made from basic shapes like balls and sausages. I made 10 balls, which I stuffed with fiberfill and catnip and then gave them to my cats. They LOVE the balls, and Hannah likes to carry one of them around in her mouth. I saved some, and I want to give them to my friends who have cats.
Next, I crocheted a mouse. I gave the mouse to my cats too!
My latest and best Amigurumi is Hello Kitty (of course!) I used a free pattern that I found online. I did make a change though, she had overalls on in the pattern but I changed it to a skirt. I just free-formed the skirt using my limited crochet knowledge and I think it turned out good!
Next I want to crochet all 10 Care Bears, a Pikachu, Angry Birds and the characters from The Big Bang Theory and some surprise things for some of my friends' babies.
I'm excited because it's a relaxing craft that isn't messy. It's easy to put away! Plus I can make neat things. There are a lot of free patterns on the internet. I also hope to make my own one day!
