Everyone has some talent, and apparently my talent is creating Comic-Con costumes!
Last year was the first year Tom, Caylin and I dressed up. We went as 3 characters from Mortal Kombat the game (and movie). Tom was Sub Zero, I was Jade and Caylin was Sonya Blade. We were NOT prepared to be treated somewhat like celebrities! People kept asking for our picture and they called us by our character names. Caylin was a little bit overwhelmed, and a teeny bit disappointed that she wasn't really being asked to be in pictures. Her costume wasn't super exciting, but she's also a kid. Unless the kid is oozing cuteness, people kind of want their picture taken with someone dressed as the "real thing."
So the first hurdle this year was choosing a costume for Caylin. Most of the female superheroes--okay, pretty much ALL of the female superheroes are sexy in some way. Short skirts, boobies, etc. Anything we did that was a superhero was going to have to be a kid-version. Kid versions are fun, but unless the costume is really WOW, people don't respond. And I wanted her to feel the fun this year. She was thinking of being Poison Ivy from Batman, but Poison Ivy is really sexy. So we'd have to do a kid version that was non-sexy (and ruining some of the appeal of the character since being sexy is part of who she is).
So I was thinking she should dress up as a character that is a kid around her age. Then you'd get the "realism" of it. I think. I suggested Lava Girl from Shark Boy and Lava Girl, but she wasn't thrilled about it. We were thinking Hit Girl from Kick-Ass, but Kick-Ass is a rated R movie and it really looks bad for her to have seen a rated R movie like that (she didn't see it at our house, Missy showed her.)
So we settled on Sailor Mercury from Sailor Moon. She already had the blue wig from her dance recital and all she needed was a blue skirt and a white and blue sailor top. I found the perfect skirt at Walmart for $5 and a V-neck tee with poufy sleeves for $3. Yay! I used felt to make the sailor collar, then added the bows, jewels and altered the skirt. I dyed her boot spats from her dance costume and we got her long gloves. Voila, Sailor Mercury!
