Lord Henry, the greatest artist of them all. Basil Hallward had his paintings, which could be seen, touched, and admired by others. Dorian Gray shared his artful face, so appealing to many, but yet a curse found too late. These two men had something that was of value to them, and to the lucky souls who still had use of their eyes. With beauty so in reach, Lord Henry could relate for he held the most talent of them all, the power to manipulate.
A person’s vocabulary holds much more then the inability to have loss for words. It is something, which if used right, could be used to control minds. Lord Henry had an opinion or theory for everything, and this is how he put a leash around Dorian’s neck. He used people’s weaknesses against them to be used for a better use, manipulation.
He was wealthy, intellectual, and a great philosopher of his time; his art could not be seen by any, but felt by all. The first conversation with Dorian proved his power, since he was the reason Dorian unknowingly ripped out his soul, packaged it, and sent it to Hell. The shear terror of loosing his beauty put Dorian in a position where he would give something so sacred that it was shoved directly into Satan’s mischievous eyes.
Lord Henry drove Basil away from his only true passion in life, Dorian. He waved Dorian over to his side of boat, pushed Basil out, and placed Dorian in his seat. By doing this, Basil was left alone to wither in his jealousy. When Dorian invites Basil and Lord Henry to see Sibyl, Lord Henry arranges it in a way were Basil has to transport himself - fallowing them from behind like a lost puppy.
My opinion is that Lord Henry represented the evil side of Dorian, while Basil was his good side. His consciences if you will. Lord Henry tried to look at everything wrong with the world and made it seem probable, while Basil looked at the good in everything to show that horrible events can be dreadful, but also forgiving. These two “consciences” are what I think the author was trying to apply in this novel. So, as Dorian starts to know how this Henry works, he craves his advice for his own corruption among his soul. In a way, Henry was everyone’s “evil side”.
I am sure that Lord Henry knew his craft well, and knew that it was an art. Visiting his uncle to find out the background on Dorian Gray, showed that he was practicing his craft because the more you know about someone, and the less they know about you, the better the out come of pure gratification for this artist.
