I started writing a story about a fire dancing Jinn and how she survives in modern day LA.
Story turns to long standing on again off again romance/kinky sex with one of Manannán mac Lir's foster children (as yet unnamed), and apparently carnie culture is going to be involved.....
In my brain mythological creatures from everywhere fuck a lot.
OHshit did I tell you guys?
I'm going to have a piece in an issue of The Battered suitcase. I don't think my contract got there in time for this one. I'll post when it happens. It's an essay about how Riot Grrl culture broke my wee heart.
That was my last acceptance.
I've gotten about four or five more "we love this story but it's not for us' type rejections. Waking Oshun got rejected again. I know that Strange Horizons wanted more plot which is fine.
For this story though I think more plot would ruin it. It's a prayer it's a scene of a prayer it's a Goddess hearing her long lost children calling to her through song because they don't have the knowledge of their ancestral religion so I think making it more plot driven would make it not as pretty. There is a very subtle point of being Black and divorced from indigenous religions, but it's not a sharp point.
So yeah. I think I'm entering another phase where a lot of magazines are not into what I'm into. I'm officially taking a fiction submission break so I can finish the essay collection. I'm in the home stretch. Fundraising for that has been better than I anticipated.
Um.
Also my tiny period related essay got rejected again. Subject matter strikes again. At least this editor came out and said that it was a pretty essay but his/her/not sure readers would be squicked.
I think that's all. I'm fucking exhausted. I'm running on 5 broken hours of sleep a day again so my crazy pants are on.
