Holly was too spiky to eat, Young Sam had discovered, and mistletoe tasted funny and also made Mummy worry about poison. Ivy was right out. Paper chains disintegrated too fast under the onslaught of dribble. Pudding was only for big boys and girls because it had brandy and coins in it. Bacon and sausages and black pudding were only for big boys and girls because they couldn’t be gummed, only chewed with grown-up teeth. Ribbons were all right but Mummy took them away in case he swallowed too much and choked.
Hogswatch wasn’t all it was cracked up to be.
