I've been letting the Senate
hearing about the Dubai Ports deal run, while I've done other stuff. Stewart Baker, the Assistant Secretary for Policy from Department of Homeland Security just testified that a terminal lease consists of a dock, a building, a crane and a parking lot. This deal would transfer the lease of 24 terminals out of the 800 at the affected six ports.
I feel mislead. I'm probably more familiar than some with port operations because of my years in and around Hampton Roads, Boston, Miami and the ports at Morehead City, Wilmington, Charleston and Savannah. I interpreted from the media reports and the uproar from elected officials that logistical operations of entire ports were being transferred and not just a lease on a few buildings.
Therefore, based on this new information, I retract my conditional
opposition to the deal and apologize for misunderstanding.
