A couple of years ago, I saw an article that claimed bananas could get into short supply because the most popular varieties have become asexual due to genetic engineering. When I was looking for a
source, I did discover that the case had been
overstated in the media, but problems exist. There has been a shortage of bananas for a couple of weeks in my local store and in fact, they've been totally out of stock for days. Further research
shows that the active hurricane season, international trading practices and a disease which forced some banana plantations to be destroyed might be blamed for the immediate shortage.
