Ruminations

Off and on and during several incarnations, I've flirted with the idea of going into the movie or television business. It started way back and right after college, when I decided to generate a script from an old classic. I bought a couple of books about script structure and how to pitch a movie, but I got kind of bored tried to adapt someone else's words for the screen and life got in the way, so I set the project aside. By the time I was ready to return, you really couldn't call Sting a beautiful young adult and Matthew Broderick had hardened and lost some of the eagerness that marked his Neil Simon days. So, because they were the two that I had pictured in the title roles and I couldn't think of anyone else, the unfinished script was shoved into my box of short stories, poems and unfinished manuscripts, a box I haven't opened for at least seven years.

My last attempt at a novel was written with a Stephen King perspective and in his genre. I envisioned it as a movie that played in my head and because the attempt has been completed, it has a beginning, middle and end, plus the concept seems marketable; I've been thinking about pulling that box, rereading the work and possibly digging out my scriptwriting guides.

When I lived in Bar Harbor, there was a local production company that primarily specialized in making videos for the the tourist trade, commercials and filming stuff for niche television. They were hirable and because the local college and community offered a lot of artistic types, I conceptualized two films. Both would've been aided by the large number of young people living freely in the woods, something Bar Harbor has by the hundreds and I'm sure they would've worked cheap, but I fell into the whole internet business and my dreams of making movies moved to the back of my mind.

I've always liked television and I've seen far more than my fair share. In days gone by, I've come up with some original concepts, but lately and perhaps it's more of a reflection upon the medium, but all I can think of at the drop of a hat would be an adaptation of something old or something derivative of the past. This isn't necessarily bad. How many translations of Lucy and Ethel have debuted each year? If the opportunity were to arise and if given a few minutes to think, I'm sure I could pitch something fairly original and specific to whichever market, but a product for television hasn't been my primary focus for a number of years.

Lately, I've been enamored with the idea of convergence or television for the broadband. Up until my wife told me that we may be moving in 2007, instead of her just starting to look for a different position at that time; I've toyed with the idea of establishing a local facility to develop and deliver content for the web. Now, though I came incredibly close to starting the ball rolling, I'm back to just playing with the idea and if I ever do make such a move, it'd probably be hosted on a server farm to make things easier for my relocation.

Along similar lines, I've also been playing around with the idea of vlogging and though I'm at a loss for what I could do without it seeming to be a documentary; I have the proper equipment and have seen some interesting examples. The only problem would be developing something perfect for me, probably a short form work of fiction and not just a simple record of a process or event.
