network update!
In the end, I splashed on a Belkin pre-N router and pre-N adapter -- I got them with Instant Savings of $40 off each so I figured it was worth a go.
I managed to get both installed last night (after a games night with a bottle of wine in me) - the setup was quick - and now I've got great internet access on my basement PC. It looks like I'll have great internal network speed as well - but haven't test that yet
