All Caroline smells is blood.

“C’mon now, love.” Klaus knots his fingers through the girl’s bleached hair. Caroline stares at the smooth, pulsing line of her throat, at the torn flesh near her shoulder. She wants to lick a path across the girl‘s skin, dig her tongue into the gore, rip it open and bite down. She steps forward.

“Caroline.” Tyler’s control is worse than hers, she thinks absently. He squeezes her hand until their fingers crack. Marrow to marrow. “Don’t.”

“It’s not like I want to,” she hisses back, fitting her palm against his, but she does. She does and it aches.

“Liar.” Tyler’s eyes, yellow and black and wanting catch hers for a moment, but then he’s drifting over to the blood all over the floor. All over the girl. All over Klaus. “Get out of here.”

“Oh, like hell,” she snaps, and steps in front of him. The girl whimpers. Caroline tastes hunger and copper and two dead policemen and the bathroom at the fair the first night. Inhale, exhale, repeat. “If I go, you’re coming with me.”

“I’m afraid that won’t be possible,” Klaus purrs. Caroline turns, tips her chin at him defiantly. He’s mouthing the girl’s pulse point. Caroline digs the nail of her thumb into the softest part of Tyler’s hand. “I requested that he stay.”

She snarls before she actually realizes she’s doing it, lips pulling back, and there’s a bit of blood at the corner of his mouth when he looks up and she’s growling. She focuses on the way it smears over his cheek and not on the erratic jump of the girl’s heartbeat. “Why.”

Klaus smirks. “Isn’t it obvious?” He nudges the girl forward and she stumbles, gasping, to the floor at Tyler‘s feet. Caroline can hear his teeth grind. “I want to make you a deal.”

She pulls Tyler to the side, rougher than she’d meant to, fingers clenching against his jacket, his forearm, his wrist. “And what deal is that?”

“You kill her,” Klaus’ eyes flick sharply towards the girl. She’s holding her neck, red from elbow to wrist. Caroline thinks she might have broken Tyler’s arm, but he heals too quickly for her to tell. “And the two of you can leave.”

She wants to snort and say they could leave anyway. Knows they can‘t, knows that she‘s lucky she‘s not dead right now. Hates this stupid sire bond thing. “And if I don’t?”

Klaus grins in that feral, but disarming way he does, that way that makes her want to crawl out of her skin and into someone else’s, and says, softly, “I kill Tyler.”

Tyler makes a small sound beside her the borders somewhere between a grunt and a whine. Caroline sucks in a mouthful of air; her tongue is heavy with the taste of iron. “You wouldn’t.”

She doesn’t even blink; he’s just gone. His teeth on the side of her neck, sharp. His  fingers pressed to Tyler’s chest when he whispers, “would you like to test that theory, sweetheart?”

Thanks, but no thanks, she thinks, as he pulls back. His mouth is a slash of red; deep inside her, something opens and spreads. Urging.

“Caroline,” Tyler says lowly, “get out of here.”

She looks between him and the girl on the ground, sniffling. Between her and Klaus. Meets his gaze, unwavering. “No.”

Tyler chokes. “Caroline, don’t-”

“Shut up, Tyler,” she snaps. Klaus drags his fingers over her collarbone, deliberate. She bends down, fingers curling against the girl’s jaw. She’s covered in blood, and Caroline can feel the strain around her eyes, the painful slide against her gums. Absently, she wonders, how hasn’t she bled out yet?

“She won’t last much longer,” Klaus breathes, knuckles brushing the bumps in her spine. There‘s a bit of a thrill in the way he presses against her back feather light, predatory, excited. She gets it, now; the rush rolling through her over and over. The need. She wants to run, hunt, fuck, feed, oh god. “You’d best hurry up.”

“I’m sorry,” she says, brushing the girl’s hair off her shoulder. She’s going to die anyway; Klaus had nicked an artery. If Caroline thinks like this, it isn’t so bad. She isn’t a monster, if she’s already dying. “I’ll try not to make it hurt.”

Tyler’s elbow grazes her hip. “Caroline-”

The girl hiccups, a wet, broken sound, and Caroline leans over, breathes in hard, presses her tongue against the wound. She remembers this: the taste, the warmth, the way it’d slid down her throat.

Above her, there is sobbing. Tyler grasps at her fingers, desperate. Klaus rubs his thumb against her bare shoulder in slow strokes. Caroline’s mouth opens against the spot where his had been.

She drinks.
