Lucero Show review

I know its been a couple days, but i'll do my best to recap the show as best as i can remember.
After my group presentation for my class on thursday, i headed down to covington with the lovely miss rosie cotton to the mad hatter for the lucero show at the mad hatter. I'd never been to the mad hatter before, but its a pretty cool place, which reminded rosie of the max from saved by the bell, but with darker walls, and a bar.
The first band was The Great Depression, which was an acoustic duo. They sounded pretty good, going for a more mellow country acoustic sound. I didn't catch any of the names of the songs and wasn't really paying too much attention, but all in all, they were a pretty good opening band.

The next band was Chris Mills and the new miserable bastards, which featured who else but Chris Mills on guitar with a celloist, bassist and drummer. These guys were pretty rocking, mixing rock with a little pop sensibility as well as a little country thrown in every now and then. The cello was featured on the lead for a few songs, but for most of the songs it was all about frontman Chris Mills' guitar and strong vocals. The band was full of energy despite now having the crowd be too into it, although they did seem to win a bit of the crowd over as they kept playing. Rosie kept commenting about how cute Mr. Mills was, although, I really didn't see it. An excellant band that I will definately be checking out in the near future.

Next up was the band Limbeck. With a bassist who looks almost exactly like ryan dunn from jackass, these guys played about 45 minutes of their southern roots rock. Combing elements of indie rock, and country these guys got the crowd riled up and ready to rock for when lucero would play. THey did have a guy who was kind of the all around musician, who played keys, guitar, and then the shaker and tamborine at the same time. He rocked that tambourine like no other. Another good opening band that I would recommend to anyone who likes lucero or drag the river.

Next came Lucero, the band everyone was waiting for. Apparently people were a little too anxious as a fight broke out while they were setting up with a very drunk guy (guitar player for the opener great depression) who was running into people which led to a bunch of people gathering around, some bar stools getting turned over and one guy getting punched in the face(probably because he had a bowl cut). It was interesting to say the least, and rosie was less than impressed. After that was all settled down, Lucero took the stage and brought the house down. No one cared about anythign else, but drinking and having a good time as Lucero played for about an hour and half. I can't remember the order of the songs but i know they played all of the following as well as a few more:
Across the River
Tonight Aint' gonna be good
I'll Just fall
My best girl
Raisin' Hell
Outsiders
Joining the army
Tears dont' matter much
California
Sixteen
chain link fence
slow dancing
nights like these
when you decided to leave
hate and jealousy
nobody's darlings
bikeriders
noon as dark as midnight
kiss the bottle (jawbreaker cover)
last night in town
and they finished off the night with Ben(singer/guitar) singing The War by himself.
All in all an excellent show, despite ben forgetting the words to chain link fence. Also at one point during a song, i can't remember which, ben turns the brian (guitar player) and says, "isn't there suppose to be a guitar solo here?" Lucero seemed to be a little sloppy, but it didn't matter because everyone was having fun and rocking out to one of the most underrated bands out there today. Rosie again commented on how she thought Roy, the drummer was "soo cute". That, I can agree on, although in an animal from the muppets kind of way.

Great Depression 7.5/10
Chris Mills and the New Miserable Bastards 8/10
Limbeck 7/10
Lucero 9/10
