If you were not lucky enough to grace Yiddish Appreciation Society today, here is the poem I wrote in honor of the Jewish Mothers among us (special thanks to Mrs. Greenberg, Mrs. Donenfeld, Mrs. Shifman, my mom, and Seth the freshman's mom for bringing us stories, food, and lifetimes of love)... (the first stanza is courtesy of Ben Greenberg)...
An Ode to Jewish Mothers
Dear moms, you’re the best.
When we’re tired, you say “get some rest.”
You make us food when we need to eat,
And when our shoes are wet, you say “don’t come in here with those feet.”
What would life be like without our mothers?
It would be so much worse for us, and our brothers.
When our plates weren’t empty, when our milk was spilt,
Who would make us feel unbearable guilt?
Who would love us? Who would nag us?
Who would serve us latkes on Shabbas?
Who would be there when we fell down
To make sure we apologized to the ground.
Who would always give us a warm sweater?
Who would never like a shiksa until they met her?
No one but our sweet, dear mother.
Though we may sometimes wish, there could never be another.
Mother, we love you dearly,
And promise to tell you at least once yearly.
We’ve come to realize you’re always right,
No matter how much we put up a fight.
We don’t know what we were thinking,
When we put our own happiness before your decision-making.
