i have gotten lost four times today. those damn trees, which they are so proud of, obstruct one's view of the buildings. Plus, I was informed by a chuckling upperclassmen, not all of the paths are on that map they give out to the freshman. so basically, i don't leave the house without an escort (who oftentimes it turns out has no idea where they're going either) or instructions. my parents dropped off a lamp before heading home this morning before my roommate woke up and i had fun showing her how much she misses when she sleeps in. anyway- the lamp's instructions were extremely vague (ambiguous pictures, no words) so i went down the hall looking for an able body to assist me with it. i would have asked my student fellow (sophomore students who serve as house advisors) for help, however i had regrettably left him at the College Center where he had guided me earlier so that i might purchase a light bulb. i, thinking that i could navigate back to my house on my own and in a hurry to try out my new lamp, rushed back in what i assumed was the direction of my room until an early morning jogger told me otherwise. so yeah i finally returned to my dorm in search of that able-bodied altruist (which essentialy means a bored pushover) and found who was at the time "some guy" and whose name i found out after he helped me was "andy". (does anyone else feel bad getting help from people whose name you don't know, but who know your name?) andy couldn't make sense of it either and we eventually decided that a part was missing from the box, said "screw it" and put the lamp together to the best of our incapacitated abilities. it is one of those weird lamps with the five different lightbulbs and the plastic covering and my parents brought me five flourescent 60 watt bulbs and one 100 watt bulb for my desklamp. however, it quickly became apparent that the 100 watt bulb was going to be too much wattage for the desklamp, so i put one of the 60watt bulbs in there and went on the previously described excursion to the College Center for a lightbulb. they had no flourescent bulbs so i foolishly thought that a 60 watt incandescent bulb would be just as good. well, when i got back to my room just now i found that the incandescent bulb had burned a hole in the plastic protective covering, so i have to find my way to the College Center tommorrow to find yet another bulb.
we just attended a "Sex and Sensibility" seminar, which reminds me that i forgot to describe andy. he is from California and he completely fits their stereotype. anyway, the seminar was completely awkward but the bright side is i found someone who could lend me Shalimar the Clown and i met a cool guy.( i also met a guy there who for those who attended SCPA is an interesting mix of both Leeds and Tony. he looked almost exactly like Leeds.)
my schedule has yet to be finalized as i have to meet with my advisor tomorrow, but as of now, i am taking History of Western Philosophy I, Freshman English 101-15: Deception and Some Truth about the Lie, Linguistics and Anthropology, and Introduction to Sociology. i really wanted Approaches to Media Studies, but my advisor, who is also part of the Media Studies department assured me that there was nothing i could do about it now (as the waiting list is already 40 students long) and that next semester they are reserving a bunch of seats for freshman who missed out this semester.
all in all, it's fun (though i have still to find the least active shower time). i'm just bummed at the moment 'cause the guy who walked me to Blodgett Hall today drank my V8. oh well, there's always Juicy Juice (yes, i DO have a case of Juicy Juice, which my roommate who is from Honduras had never heard of. I'm glad she came to Vassar to get a taste of the finer things of life.)
yeah this is longer than i intended and there's an 80's party at Jos tonight so I'll stop.
