Opponent: Silver
Score: 11-2, (W, 1-1)
Personal Stats: 2-3, 1 Run
Recap: Yay!
Seriously, that was one of the best played games by a team of which I've been a part. We held them scoreless in the first inning, and scored two runs in the bottom of the first. They came back with two runs of their own in the second to tie it up, but then we scored four and never looked back. Our defense played very well, though we were helped out with automatic outs on two occasions, first where an injured player could not make their at-bat, and a second when one of their players had to leave early. I doubt either of those two outs would have produced 9 runs though. ;) The particularly strange part was that I did not have a single ball hit to me while we were on defense. That may not be too unusual in some cases, but I was playing shortstop two innings, left center another two innings, and first base for one inning. I did get the ball on the last play of the game, however, stretching to catch the throw, nipping the runner at first and completing a double play. My defensive schemes seemed to work pretty well.
Personally, I had a meh game at the plate. I batted leadoff to test it out (I'll be putting Brandon back there next week) and started out our at-bats with a weak pop behind third (I dropped my shoulder again, will be going to the batting cage this week to work on it). My second at-bat was much better, I kept my shoulder up and laced a single up the middle. My final at-bat was a mix, as I kind of dropped my shoulder and pushed it far enough that it dropped behind the infielders and in front of the outfielders. I scored from first on a hit to the gap one of the times, so running seems good this year (I've been doing thirty second "sprints" in my cardio workout at the gym to simulate baserunning).
Overall, offense and defense came together beautifully, and the team really got to see some of its potential. The other team was missing a couple key players, so they'll probably play us a little closer next time, but this was definitely a confidence boost.
Summary: My first coaching victory was pretty sweet, though outside of my defensive setups I suppose there wasn't much I actually had to do with it. :) As always, I'm looking forward to next week!
