Jake Marshall hadn't been expecting visitors.

Normally, this wouldn't have put him on edge, but given his run in with Gant, the cowboy cop was a bit more wary. Gant was taking everything with the same stride he always did. Never a good thing. Jake could hardly be blamed for his paranoia. And without Lana there to pretend to be unaffected for, Jake had no reason not to act with caution.

He approached the door, his knife initially in his hand. However, as he got closer, he slid the weapon back into his pocketing, telling himself that even if it was Gant, the worst possible thing he could do would be to stab him again. He put a hand on the doorknob but didn't quite turn it yet. Instead, he called out, "Who's there?"

"A neighbor," she responded. If they were going to exercise caution, so was she. "I don't want anything, just to find out who lives here with me."

A woman's voice. That put Jake a bit more at ease and he opened the door. "Sorry about that, Ma'am," He said somewhat sheepishly. "Never really know who's gonna be on the other side."

He offered a smile. "Guess that'd be me. This is my apartment."

She smiled. "No, I understand. Caution is often a good thing."

She made a point of not peering around him into the apartment. So instead, she introduced herself. "Mia Fey."

Jake nodded in response. "Name's Jake Marshall. You new?"

Mia Fey...he'd heard that name before. The question was, where? Still, she seemed nice enough. Reminded him a little bit of Lana, truth be told.

"Nice to meet you, Jake. I'm relatively new - I've only been here since... well, late January, I guess. I moved into this apartment -" she gestures down the hall "- after the snowstorm ended."

"Probably the best time to do it. Sounds like you missed the collapse of Latimer, then." He absently began shaving, even if there wasn't much there to shave. "That was a pretty bad, Madonna. Didn't affect this floor, but it was still pretty bad."

"Not quite, but regardless, here I am, in the same building, no less." She leaned against the doorframe, crossing her arms.

Jake smirked. "You want to come in? I don't got much to offer you but no reason for you to stand around in the hall..."

"I'm sure my apartment is equally, if not more, sparse than yours. I wouldn't mind sitting down for a chat, though." Mia just smiled, still standing in the doorway. Ladies don't go where they're not invited, after all.

Jake motioned to the apartment behind him. "Well, come on in, then. Have a seat, Madonna. Think the only thing I got to drink is what passes for alcohol 'round these parts, but I got enough of that if you want some of that."

He wandered back into the room himself, stopping next to a cactus to introduce it. "This is Billy. Just me and him here for the time being."

"No, that's all right. It's a bit early for that, really."

She followed him into the room, shutting the door behind her. "Billy. Where did you find him?" She reached out to touch the spines gently. "I used to have a plant."

Jake shrugged and helped himself to his flask. "The scientists brought him here, best I can tell. Last time I saw him...well, it was awhile ago, Pardner."

He sat and waited for Mia to do the same. "Where did you say you were from?"

"Is that so? Awfully nice of them, wasn't it."

She sat and smoothed her skirt, finding nothing to distract her. "Los Angeles. If that means anything to you."

Jake arched an eyebrow. "LA? No kidding? That's where I'm from, Madonna." He leaned forward slightly. "Don't suppose you know anyone else here from there? Seems to be a lot of us."

In response, Mia leaned back and crossed her legs. "There are a lot of people from home here. An entire noisy apartmentful."
