Yousuke, Naoto and Shinjiro had formed a team. Their plan was, that as soon as there was a short reprieve in the rain, they would make a run for it. The sun was setting by the time it did. They didn't have much of an opening, but for now, it was all that they could hope for ( ... )

Shinjiro trailed the other two in wary silence. A few times, on the way over, he regretted even agreeing to this. Ever since he'd gotten his chip out, the idea of fighting alongside people felt... even less attractive than before. Only if necessary. For emergencies, at least where Castor was concerned.

But Castor wouldn't be concerned here. Since they didn't know about his chipless status, he'd fight the way he preferred to, with his strength alone. As the last dregs of light bled out of the sky, he pushed the worst of his doubts out of his mind. He'd need to focus on the battle ahead ( ... )

Dante had been lurking about the rooftops of Latimir Street, watching people hurry around below. He was feeling bored and was ready to retire when he noticed a small, armed party heading towards a warehouse.

Well, that was something.

In one movement the half-devil pounced across the street and landed on the building that the group was entering. Shinjiro he recognized immediately. The other two, Yousuke and Naoto, were mostly strangers to him though he had seen them around before.

Once Shinji entered the warehouse, Dante dropped down the street behind him, landing in a crouch.

"Hey, now, you three," he crowed and turned towards the doors with a flourish of his coat.

"You're not starting a party without me are ya?"

"Am I okay? That's a good question..." the Shadow mused with an insincere smile. Souji managed to balance himself on his own two feet, but he couldn't mask the wince that spread over his face, even in the darkness.

"That's enough," his voice was weaker than he would've preferred. It was dim compared to the piercing glow of his Shadow's yellow eyes. "I know what you're trying to say."

"But you can't accept it, can you?" Souji didn't respond to that. His Shadow just sighed, shaking his head.

"Being silent is the only way I can cope anymore," the Shadow declared, voice taking on a mocking tone. "But just keeping quiet like a good little boy won't erase the resentment I feel in my heart.

"Stop lying to yourself. You hate everything, but you have to choke it all down anyway, because you're the leader. The responsible one. The person other people can rely on and tug in all directions at their leisure. But at the end of the day, you're sick and tired of everything..."

"That's not..." Souji faltered.

"I hate my parents for constantly ( ... )

Listening to this was a kick to the gut. He felt like he had done something wrong at some point; to add to this. Maybe they all had. A leader could certainly neglect their troops, but also, the reverse could be possible as well. Even if he hadn't been there.

Had he been selfish? Back in Inaba, Souji was always helping people out. It was just what he did. Yousuke never considered that he might need help himself... All of those things he just said...

He felt uneasy, but it wasn't the time for it. They could duke this out later. Now was the time to kick some Shadow ass ( ... )

It was inevitable. That's what she told herself. This fight was inevitable; there was no use in listening, no use-Kanji was here now, too, and she felt a brief frustration (wasn't he injured?). She'd never put away her revolver, and kept it at the ready. Trying to listen to Souji, trying to take each word syllable by syllable. They weren't words. This wasn't-she wasn't listening to them ( ... )

The conversation between Souji and his Shadow stirred up unease in him... even anger at those comments about Nill. Though he couldn't pay attention to that right now. He edged forward a little near the end, unsure why-- but it seemed like shit was about to hit the fan.

Soon enough, it did. When that skeletal angel appeared above mock-Souji, Shinjiro took another step or two forward. Almost close enough to attack. Near enough to feel the heat of that damned Ziodyne attack, even if it didn't hit him. He hesitated just a half second. Dilemma. He'd never seen this kind of shadow before. If it wasn't vulnerable to physical attacks...

Hell. No way of knowing that for sure. He rushed forward in the wake of Naoto's attempt, axe out and swinging down with his full strength. He just hoped this thing wasn't immune to physical damage... or too quick.
