April Plot (Part 1)

Apr 09, 2010 20:45

Pirate Group:

Oh hay pirate guys. We remember you. And we have a doozy of an update.

You left Discedo on Friday (4/09). Yeah, it's sudden. You'll be sailing on the deep blue for three days with little activity going on, able to say your own piece.

And then after three days on a boat (4/12), here’s what’s gonna happen.

During your fun vacation cruise, you may notice that as you get further and further away from Discedo, the less and less usable the communicators become. Think like cell phone reception! Voice and Video posts won’t work as well and will tend to drop. Text will only function a little better. But hey, this is no problem. Because you’re pirates.

After those three days, which you will make as eventful or uneventful as you please, (And orcas(?!) for your sailing pleasure) you are going to encounter the monstrous SEACAT (link). And this great and grinning colossus is going to TIDAL NYAAAAAAA your asses all the way to...

to...?

You will land on the shore on Monday (4/12), having just recovered from the attack of the Seacat. The boat will be slightly damaged, but it's nothing that cannot be fixed. You'd barely have time to gather yourself before you see a sign, somewhat buried in the dirt but still legible.

"Welcome to Spero!"

What is Spero? Not only just a name listed on the subway signs of Discedo, but apparently also a city that lies Northwest of Discedo. Apparently. Though this city is less of a city and more of a ghost town.

The city, as you see it from the shoreline, is completely void of people- of life in general, save for the weeds that grow through the broken pavement's cracks. Some of the buildings have been destroyed, similar to Discedo. However, some landmarks stand out to you as you look around the area.

Residence areas - areas of apartments like in Discedo. Hotels can also be seen, as well, though closer to the shopping district which contains a large shopping mall. A university is also in this city, and a hospital. Closer to the outskirts of town can be seen an observatory like in Dissimulo, and some odd camps. The city in general is a little smaller than Discedo, due to the destruction done to it; however, over the next few days or so, there will be plenty to explore and discover for the pirate group. It will be divided into a few posts, due to how much there is to cover. But since you're here in Spero anyway, might as well relax and enjoy your time =)

In the pursuit of knowledge, go to:

The University

The University of Spero is large, modern, and very empty. Parts
of it seem to be nothing more than a ghost town, but several of the
buildings have begun to crumble from neglect. Possibly also from the
slightest hint of struggle...?

The main hall is still in tact. Most of the classrooms are ordinary:
rows of desks, maybe some scattered papers and textbooks, but mostly
they seem shockingly uninteresting. However, at the very end of the
main hall there's a set of double doors. They're locked: a rusty chain
is wrapped around the handles.

Writing on the doors reads "Laboratory 1."

Interested? Well, that chain shouldn't give you much trouble.

If the main hall looked good, the hallway leading from that door into
the laboratory is absolutely pristine. Everything inside looks like it
would have been gleaming, in the past. Now everything is covered in a
fine layer of dust, including several devices that remain in tact on
the tables.

The first...should look very familiar. It's a communicator, very much
like the ones each character in Discedo has. It seems quite a bit
clunkier than theirs, though: older, less efficient. Instead of a
record button, there's a small switch. It's set to 'record.' Care to
turn it on?

>>Videopost;
[Click. The recording begins. The device seems to be in the
hands of a man in a lab coat; his face is obscured by dark goggles.
He's surrounded by several others, and uses the device to record what
might be an experiment.]

Trial 15. Experiment 2, transfer of matter. Subject... [The
man holds up an apple.]

Now-- ready? [Two of the men nod and move off-screen. The
video shifts, focusing on the apple. A switch can be heard flipping
off-screen. The lights overhead flicker a moment...and the apple is
gone.

There's a moment of silence.

Then, all at once, the men in the room begin to laugh.]

Trial 15 -- success!

[The transmission ends there.]

All throughout the lab there are small devices, not like this one, all
different. One, a battery-powered device that emits a low hum when
turned on: all it seems to do is cause static electricity. A
solar-powered computer; long since dead. The solar panels are in
shambles.

Several small models --prototypes-- line the shelves. Some are
structured the same way as the rest of the technology in the room.
Some...are wildly different. An old-fashioned Earth telephone, a
streamlined faster-than-light ship, a one-person vehicle that seems
designed to float, not roll.

Blueprints line the walls. Some are for the machinery in the room,
some...are not.

Since pirates need a place to stay for the night and then some:

Residences in Spero
Mostly these seem to be apartment-style, a little like Discedo. Unlike
Discedo, however, most of these buildings are high-rises, equipped to
accomodate a massive number of people. There are hotels in the
shopping district, and most of those are set up in a similar manner.

Inside the furniture is showing signs of neglect; musty from weather,
moldy from time, dusty, beginning to fall apart much like the
furniture and housing in Discedo is. Personal belongings remain,
however: photographs of families that lived there, televisions,
phones, computers. None of them work; not even the lights work. But
they haven't been moved. Some of the lower floors have been looted,
windows smashed in, goods and products ripped from the walls,
apartments ransacked and destroyed. Outside some of the buildings have
been spraypainted with graffiti. Some have suffered signs of not just
neglect, but abuse.

Several newspapers can be found around the residences, if you care to
look. The first talks about the apparent Accedian occupation of Spero.
Or, "as it's called by some," the article states, "a hostile
takeover." The article's author calls that a vast exaggeration.
The article is old, faded, dirty; the only part that seems to have any
relevance is at the end:

The only casualty in this new partnership with Accido
is the city's ties with its neighbor, Discedo. Previously the two
cities worked together in collaboration to develop new technology and
medicine. However, due to Accido and Discedo's rocky past, those ties
must be severed.

Another article advertises the communicator earlier found in the
university lab. The advertisement says: NEW! Speak, type, record
memories and keep it all for years to come!

The last article of any note --because really, who cares about the
sports pages?-- speaks about supposed technological breakthroughs
within the laboratory at Spero. It goes in detail about the
communicator: its functions, speculations about what it was designed
for, and how it can be marketed as a device for convenience. It also
makes reference to a new vehicle in development. The article only says
that it will "revolutionize the way we look at our world...and maybe
the next."

Discedo:

However, we have not forgotten about those back in Discedo ♥.

People in Discedo will notice, barely a day after the pirates have set sail- the weather's finally getting warmer! The snow is finally melting away, and the sun's come out without being hindered by sudden clouds or whatnot. It's feeling a little more like spring. Hurray!

However, that is not the only thing the people in Discedo can expect to happen within the next week or so.

What could it be? Stay tuned for the next part o/ (to be posted... tomorrow)
