The history of Mao as it’s seen in the wiki is pretty short. It also states only that Mao was Eugene’s subordinate, but it never says how the two met so:
After Mao’s Force went berserk, he went into the castle of Balka, where he caused quite a chaos. The soldiers couldn’t stop him, as he was not even listening, but attacking them, whole this time saying only “Who... am I?”. At the scene arrived Eugene and Saleh. Once they saw that the boy most probably lost his memory as his Force went berserk, Saleh decided it would be better to kill the boy. Euegene however stopped him from doing so, and in that moment Mao lost his consciousness, completely exhausted.
After that Eugene took the boy in and gave him the name “Mao” since the boy remembered nothing of his pasts, not even his true name. Eugene was the commander of army, so Mao became a soldier and his subordinate.
When Eugene left the castle, Mao deserted from the army and followed him, despite Eugene’s disagreement.
Personality:
First of all Mao is incredibly cheerful, talkative and optimistic boy. He is usually the one who jokes around, laughs or is generally the “mood maker” of the team. He is rarely seen taking things seriously, unless he has no other choice. Moreover, when people around him are too “gloomy” to his liking, he starts to bother them, tease them, or talks even more than usually, only to make the atmosphere more lively. If he’s unsuccessful in getting someone to talk with him, he gets annoyed. He himself sated once that he can’t stand gloomy people.
It may be interesting to add, that Mao didn’t seem to be bother because of his memory loss. He had fun traveling with Eugene and everyone else, and that was enough for him. He seemed to be always telling himself that the fact he has no memory, is not something to be worried about, because either one day his memory will come back or he’ll meet someone that knew him. He also said that past is not important to him, but it’s the future that counts. Despite this, he never thought about what he wants to do in the future.
Unfortunately, after clearing Fenia’s trial, it turned out that Mao never had any memory in the first place and that he was created by Fenia herself, so that the Sacred Beasts could see the world - or rather the interaction between Humas and Gajumas- from the perspective of a person. This event causes him to wonder what he actually is - is he a person? He can’t think of himself as anything other than that and yet he still has doubts.
Mao’s really worried about what other may say once they find out -especially since he himself has trouble accepting that fact - he still acts cheerful and optimistic in front of them though. It shows that Mao actually is only acting like a person that never takes anything seriously - the reason for him acting like this is to make others around him happy. It also shows how much he hates to worry others. He’s a really good liar and actor, so it’s not a problem for him to hide his worries. He can pretty much make up believable lie on a spot.
Mao is also more mature than he seems at the first glance. Sure, he acts like a child most of the time - getting angry at little things, arguing over something completely unimportant or getting cocky in the battle. However, as Eugene took the boy in, Mao joined the army and he is more than aware of how things look on the battlefield or generally he knows a lot about the situation in the country. He’s also quite knowledgeable and wise, and he is a pretty good judge of a character. When situation is getting serious, he is definitely not the one to act without thinking.
Another thing is, that Mao loves to tease others. If he spots someone’s weakness, he can tease them about a lot. For example: he teases Annie about her fear of ghosts, telling her scary stories; he also teases Tytree, both making fun of the other’s naiveté and, how Mao calls it, Tytree's “sister-complex”; he teases Veigue about his gloominess and Hilda about her age (which is actually a revenge for Hilda calling him a child - note: Mao gets extremely annoyed when someone treats him like a little kid).
Of course, his teasing is by all means not to annoy anyone, but mostly to lighten up the mood. Mao is actually a very kind person and he would never hurt anyone's feelings, nor leave someone who needs help. He is also the one, who gets worried about other people the most and asks to check if everything is fine with them. He also cares a lot about his friends, especially about Eugene. Mao is grateful to him, for taking him in and giving him the name. The name “Mao” is so important to him, that he refuses to be called by his true name and prefers to “stay as Mao”. Also Eugene is pretty much his father figure. When Eugene fell victim to the Impression, that caused him to became swallowed by hatred, Mao refused to leave his side and even started to cry from happiness when Eugene was cured. Despite the fact that he wasn’t showing it, Mao was scared that he might lose Eugene.
When it comes to things that Mao likes to do, apart from teasing others, he likes to sing. A lot. And he is the one who makes up his own songs - and to tell the truth all of them have little to no sense at all. Basically, he makes them up for his own (or Annie’s) amusement.
He also loves cute things and it doesn’t really matter if it’s a thing, an animal or even a person. He also sometimes says that he himself is cute.

Character Abilities: Mao can use Force in form of spells. His main element is fire (since he posses the Force of Flame). He's also skilled in wielding a pair of tonfas.
Ah, I almost forgot! One of his abilities is also summoning a Force Cube, with which he is able to tell if there are other Force Users nearby. He is also able to tell how strong they are.
