K, so I was thinking about fandom community stuff in class today, especially communities where one can find "good fic". And what I thought was that I've already got a list of "good writers" in my head. If I see their stuff pop up on any community I'm going to read it. I've got most, but not all, of my favorite writers friended, so I get to see their stuff come up on my flist, too. I'm friends with some of my favorite writers, and occasionally am lucky enough to have their stuff show up in my inbox. If I don't have them friended, I do a little click thought their journals every once and a while to make sure I haven't missed anything.
In terms of "people who are pretty much universally acknowledged to be be good writers in fandom", those are the people we're all reading anyway, right?
What would be amazing would be a community where good stories by new writers, or less well known writers were posted. Which, you know. Is a totally impossible thing. But, whatever, it was more interesting to think about than .. oh god, what were we even talking about? Veblen's Critique of Institutions of Business. /o\
I guess it's kind of like the age old dilemma about whether to rec the story with five pages of comments, or five comments. The one with five pages of comments probably deserved every one of the comments, and it's not like the author doesn't deserve the recognition. On the other hand, it's not like they need extra help.
Anyway, this has nothing to do with anything, except that if someone were to make a community and it could have magical powers, I wish it would be one that let me know about awesome stories that I'd missed.
And, I guess, that I have no idea what's going on *gesture* over there, but I'm kind of terrified that a new community is going to rise from the ashes and provide a new mean for which people can be made to feel excluded.
