Dexter, season four

I finished the 4th season of Dexter.

Right off, this season had scenes that legitimately disturbed me. Author killing the woman in the bathtub was just awful. Him being naked and holding her, the intimacy felt like a rape.

And then the scene where Author breaks his son's finger? HOLY SHIT. I have the hugest OH MY GOD, OWWWW, reacting to anything involving fingers, and then the way the son tries to keep quiet and then the look on Author's face afterwards and fuuuuuuuck. :( Everything involving the family was so incredibly upsetting. The mother saying that she doesn't care what Dexter did or is going to do with the daughter as long as he doesn't tell Author? (There wasn't a lot of this, but it kind of seemed like the mother hated her daughter a little bit-- I'm guessing because Author gave his attention to her.)

I almost feel like the way Author abused his family went a little bit further than it needed to go. I was really fucking disturbed by that.

The twist of the reporter being Author's daughter worked really well. I had heard the spoiler that Rita would be killed, but I didn't know about that other twist. The scene where she reaches out to her father and he says never to call again and then she starts crying in these hiccupy sobs just killed me. It's that noise of utter panic and desperation and just... uggg, so heartbreaking.

And then the scene where Deb breaks down about Lundy's death? ;________;

And, then, OMG, RITA. And how it was ALL DEXTER'S FAULT. He gets close to a horrible serial killer because he wants to LEARN from him, and brings that evil into his family's life and then RITA DIES. And she's naked in the bathtub, and that first scene where we see what the murder looks like, and ;____________; I keep thinking about what an awful way that is to die. And how horrible it's going to be for her kids. I really hope that Dexter doesn't become their guardian.

I didn't end up finishing the book (and now I can't find it, /o\) but it started off saying how Rita is so perfect for Dexter because she's already been so damaged that she can't tell how fucked up he is. I know they started with that in the 1st season-- like in the book, Dexter is afraid to have sex with her because women are always able to tell how fucked up he is. But then Rita actually LIKES it (which hints pretty horrifically at what she must have been used to with her exhusband). But then they kind of drop that, and Rita's just this ~perfect mother~. It really worked for the show to kill Rita, because it just doesn't make sense that she'd stay with Dexter. Especially after we see her getting therapy and learning how to stand up for herself.

Anyway, you know. !!!!!!! What a season. That was probably a little intense to watch straight through like I did, yowza.
