Chase was a little exhausted. His birthday had been both nice and trying. Waking up first thing in the morning and finding that his dorm mates had left a few gifts on his trunk was nice, but he still felt he had not deserved them. And then after receiving hugs from several of his housemates he was accosted in his journal by Andrew’s glaring birthday greeting. His day had not started off poorly, but still Chase was unhappy that it was his ‘birthday’. Luckily the rest of the day seemed to go off normally. Classes went by as slowly as they normally did and he managed to avoid any more embarrassing scenes. He did receive an owl and gift from his mother, a green sweater like the one he’d misplaced, or rather lost, which was a surprise. So she had been reading his letters, he’d made a mental note to tell Morag this.
It was after dinner though that Chase got his big surprise planned by Andrew. The Hufflepuff boy had planned on retiring to his room to read for a while, something that he normally wouldn’t do without procrastinating first, but because he did not feel like he wanted to have anybody else proclaim this was his special day, he figured this was the best idea. Upon reaching the common room though, he found it filled with his friends, streamers hung upon the walls in one corner of the room and a rather lovely looking birthday cake set off to one side. Shocked, that this had been planned in such short time, and not expecting it at all, he started when they shouted surprise!
At first, Chase was annoyed. He’d particularly told them that he was not a fan of his birthday and that he did not feel the need to celebrate it. But the more and more he got hugs and had people tell him Happy Birthday he felt his dislike melt away on the subject. These people had thrown this together on such short notice, and had made the effort, even with the Carrows about, to make sure he had a ‘happy’ day. It didn’t take long for Chase to completely forget about the fact that he was bitter that it was ‘his’ day, and for it to become something they could all enjoy despite what was going on around them. They deserved this.
After lots of chatter, a few gifts being opened, an impromptu round of The Birthday Song, both Andrew and (he suspected) Lucy trying to get him drunk on some of the ‘adult’ beverages they’d brought, a streamer un-transfiguring itself and falling on to Chase’s head in the form of one of Lucy’s socks, and a slice of Mei’s delicious cake, Chase, noting the hour, insisted that the party come to an end. He was slightly sad to see his friends from other houses file out to return to their respective commons but he didn’t want any of them in trouble. Giving Andrew a rather strong hug when his mate passed him by, he closed the portrait behind them all and let out a sigh.
Of course his housemates that were celebrating with him were still there but the din of the room had quieted considerably. He was glad it was over, because he worried that if he didn’t make them all leave, they might have over stayed and he’d miss out on his date…rather visit with Cornelia that evening. Eyeing his friends who were busy doing what they may, and after a few quick clean up spells he located Cornelia in the commons and went to sit next to her on the couch.
“Hi.” He said with a smile. He wasn’t really sure what else to say. He worried perhaps that she’d be too tired to spend time with him. He was okay, if that was the case, but then again when did Cornelia ever seem tired? Rarely.
