Next recapy reviewy thing is here...
Btw last night's Merlin episode (S03E02) was totally wonderful, I LOVED it. I'm so reviewing that one when I get around to it. So much goodness! Arthur being Kingly! Merlin/Morgana sword fight! Arthur/Gwen!
AN EPIC MERLIN REWATCH OF MERLIN EPICNESS
Season 1 Episode 3: The Mark of Nimueh
- Strange egg of strangeness? That is the least threatening magical egg I've ever seen. Come on, Merlin, if you're going to do a magic runic egg, at the very least you've got to
make someone kiss it.
- Gwen! And her dad. Smoked pigeon sandwiches? Really, Gwen? I suppose, its meat. If you're a servant you get what you can.
- Its an interesting dilemma. Merlin thinks he should do the right thing by saving people. Gaius thinks he should be more careful with his magic. As we see from later on in the episode, Gaius has a point- if you're suspected of witchcraft, you're pretty much screwed unless there's a magical cure. So save other people or save yourself (with the potential to save loads more people in the future)?
- The illness looks pretty daft. I know, Gaius, its obvious what the illness is! Its all that blue paint those dead people covered themselves in! The paint fumes must've got to them.
- I miss how much Gwen/Merlin we had in season 1. G+M BFFs 4E! I never really shipped Merlin/Gwen but its still cute. Angel is so wonderful in the scene where she's in jail, she actually nearly brought me to tears
- And its nice to see Morgana and Gwen being friends unlike season 3 where Morgana is a total bitch to my bb Gwen.
- No, Arthur, don't accuse your future wife of witchcraft! To be fair, he did find a magic poultice in her house and magic is outlawed. Its not like there was no evidence. And then he joins Morgana in sticking up for her. Yay! Even at this point Arthur gets that magic isn't completely evil- there is good magic and bad magic.
- Merlin giving himself up for Gwen. Awwww. If he was determined to prove he was the sorcerer, why didn't he do some magic then to prove it? That was a nice moment, though, when everyone turned to look at him and Arthur was like "Merlin?"
- Jesus, Slash!Dragon could you vague that up for us? Why does Merlin continue to visit him if he's so unhelpful and smug?
- Its interesting that different characters throughout the series say something to the effect of "Leave Arthur to me". It this episode is was Morgana. We know in future episodes its Gwen. Does that signify something? Possibly that at this point he's closer to Morgana, while in future episodes Gwen is the one who understands him.
- The Avanc is quite well done, surprisingly, for a monster made of clay. They didn't show the whole thing, just little glimpses in shadow, which was definitely wise because otherwise it'd look frickin ridiculous.
- I love that people keep thinking Merlin has feelings for Gwen when he totally doesn't. Arthur, Morgana...everyone except Gwen. I can see why they'd think that- they know he's hiding things, he feels he has to give himself up for her. And Merlin's reaction is hilarious, very nearly "But girls have cooties!"
Best Lines:
Slash!Dragon: You are but one side of a coin. Arthur is the other.
Arthur: Merlin is a wonder, but the wonder is that he's such an idiot!
Merlin: Maybe I should go around wearing a pointy hat.
Gaius: I don't think you'll find one big enough.
Arthur: I've found a place for you to put things, its called a cupboard.
Arthur: Witchcraft is an evil, but so is injustice.
