This post is mainly consisting of two things:
GUSHING
(about romcoms)
I would say SPOILERS! but we all know what happens in rom coms anyway.
I watched Leap Year last night and it was AWESOME. Seriously. Watch it.
I watched The Proposal for the second time a few days ago and while I love Sandra Bullock, I love Ryan Reynolds and I love the plot, its missing...something.
ladieofthebees and I came to the conclusion that its because the two characters have no 'moment' near the end that solidifies the idea that they should be together- which means that its not completely satisfying.
However, its completely different with Leap Year. It was FULL of 'moments' between the characters and I LOVED IT. I think I counted maybe 8 or 9. It was beautiful- Ireland looks lovely. And it was funny without it being slapstick comedy, which I feared from the trailers it would descend into. Amy Adams' character Anna is one of those always-in-control-freak women (a strange trend in current rom coms- e.g. The Proposal, 27 Dresses, The Ugly Truth...) but she's actually really likeable at the same time (because duh she's Amy Adams). The male lead is Declan, played by Matthew Goode and I am now officially in love with the guy. He's BRILLIANT! He's Oirish and lovely and *sigh*. He's strangely not your typical romantic lead in that he's sort of a bit of an arse a lot of the way through- but an arse in the way that he's your favourite character as he's got that Oirish twinkle in his eye and that Oirish humour. I love me some Oirish. *fangirls* And they are just perfect together. They made me giggle just by being adorable- without being sickly sweet. Yes, we all know what happens at the end but thats part of the charm.
Overall, its probably the most enjoyable and all-round lovable and squee-worthy rom com I've seen in AGES. I LOVED IT.
RANTING
So, in my enthusiasm, despite the fact that it was 2am and I had to get up at 8am, I went on Rotten Tomatoes to look up Leap Year to see how it did.
It got 20%. I'm simultaneously flabberghasted, disgusted and unsurprised. WHY oh WHY is it that rom coms are always generally found to be on a much lower level than everything else? Why are they judging a rom com against films that are 'big' and 'meaningful' like Schindler's List and Titanic? And why do they get blasted for being 'predictable'? WE LIKE PREDICTABLE! THATS THE POINT! Thrillers? Predictable- the bad guy gets caught, good guy wins. Horrors? Predictable- bad guy appears to have been beaten but reappears in the last moments. Dramas? Predictable- everyone is depressed walking out of the cinema. EVERY sort of film nowadays is predictable to some extent simply because every story has been done before and every story uses similar tropes and conventions. But why is a rom com like Leap Year which is funny, sweet, sexy, adorable, and extremely enjoyable the one that gets picked on? Rom coms are pretty darn popular nowadays so does that mean that the general viewing public is stupid and has no taste? Or does it just mean that on occasion we'd prefer to watch two people fall in love rather than a war epic or a story of a woman battling cancer? And, to be completely honest, I'd prefer to watch Leap Year over and over again than something like The Dark Knight. That may mean that I've got no taste whatsoever, but I don't care.
Conclusion: They should be judging Leap Year against other rom coms as its pretty damn awesome.
Ahem. Can you tell I liked Leap Year? *fangirls*
