I've been thinking about love. Specifically, love and romance as portrayed in films and tv shows and why sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. In the past few days I've watched Tuck Everlasting and The Magic of Ordinary Days (unsatisfying love stories) and The Painted Veil and North and South (satisfying love stories). I've been trying to

Ok, now that we've got that off the way, I think we connect to love stories that seem real, that we have experienced or witnessed amongst friends and acquaintances, flawed characters are always more relatable and realistic than 2d characters who seem perfect and will have the perfect relationship together. That's why most of the time, the love stories that seem real to me are those who are not easy, bringing their fair share of hurt. I agree that love is the greatest gift of all and we all want to find it, it's beautiful blah blah blah, yeah but it's not always requited, smooth sailing and only last if people work at it becoming more a story about companionship than really love, in my opinion.
And wow, woman, if you didn't own my soul before, you do now cause Fight Club is in my top three movies of all time and I've always said that Ed Norton was so much more attractive, intersting and better than Pitt. Unfortunately it's the latter that got all the recognition and cult following because like in the movie he was Tyler Durden, the guy everyone wants to be with the freedom the norton character so desperately needed, while Norton's character actually represented us, and as always it's more difficult to face the "truth" than get lost in an imaginary alternate universe.
And speaking of love stories how awesome and real is Norton's character "love story" with Marla? She was the his only connection to reality and maybe his glimpse of happiness or at least peace, as fucked up that happiness could be.
Anyway, I ramble so yes to everything you said!

I think you're right, flawed characters are more realistic and therefore more relatable, which means that their story means more to you and effects you more than a perfect 2D character would. I keep using the Twilight example, but my problem with it is that while the characters definitely aren't perfect, they think they are. Bella- inane, simpering, spineless, dull. Everyone thinks she's great. WHY? Its very frustrating and in the end the love story leaves me cold because I don't give a damn about any of the characters.
And wow, woman, if you didn't own my soul before, you do now
Oh good! *puts keenan24's soul in Box of Soul's for future usage*
I fear you're right about Ed Norton- people just gloss over his INCREDIBLE performance in Fight Club and go "Oh, Brad Pitt's dressed funny and likes to punch things." Its quite sad, but I say its their loss.
