Natalie.mu January 2011 Kaoru Interview Translated by Risu at
www.orchestrated-chaos.com DIR EN GREY will release their new single “LOTUS” on January 26. This single will be released around 14 months after their previous single, “Hageshisa to, Kono Mune no Naka de Karamitsuita Shakunetsu no Yami” that caused a sensation with its shocking video clip. The title song is a melodious and medium number devoid of screams and growls. The coupling is a new recorded version of popular song “OBSCURE” and a live recording of “Reiketsu Nariseba”. All 3 songs were sent to a famous engineer abroad who has turned ito into a more dynanic sound that you can enjoy.
This time on Natalie we interview band member Kaoru(G). Apart from the new single, we talked about interesting things such as the current state of the band following after the end of the “UROBOROS” (Released November 2008) tour, and also about the upcoming release of their new album this year.

The chains called “UROBOROS” has disappared and we were able to play freely
--I saw a DIR EN GREY in the fall last year and at the start of this year. When I compared it to the Nippon Budokan performance last year in January, I thought that the band's image has changed somewhat. The sound itself has gotten thicker and I could feel that everyone was relaxed or was enjoying themselves onstage. Was there some kind of a change of heart?
Kaoru: Maybe it could be interpreted that the binds called “UROBOROS” have disappeared and we were able to freely play. Actually we began creating songs in a flat state even though after the Budokan performance we thought of searching for various potentials. During that time the tour began so mentally speaking it was more liberating than before or rather as you said a while ago we had room to breathe. Also we structured lives with songs that we were used to playing so it is true that we were able to become a bit relaxed.
--You mean that compared to tour where you present the album, you were able to simply enjoy doing lives.
Kaoru: Exactly
--In October last year, you appeared in “LOUD PARK” after 4 years, and what I heard more was that the audience response was different from before. Did you actually feel a response that the situation has changed?
Kaoru: Anyway, the ones who were most surprised was us who were performing. Right before that, it was like 4 years ago we were thinking “it's a pretty cold response” as when we went on stage so we were very surprised. This time there were a lot of times when the audience helped us, and our live became easier to unfold, that's why more than just a feedback...it's like there was a place. Or rather, I thought that it became a live would lead to the future.
--When you appeared 4 years ago, DIR EN GREY was just starting their overseas activities, in other words I thought that your visibility and recognition among the people who listen to foreign rock was not that high. But the result of your recent activities can also be seen from the “LOUD PARK” audience response.
Kaoru: That's right. Also there is a problem with tickets to our solo lives being hard to get so it's also that it would be easy to watch us at those kinds of events. Of course it wouldn't be possible if we weren't able to get an offer but I would like appear now and again in the future.
“LOTUS” is a song that that was worth it arranging
