Here's another one to add to the list: Originally, Pierce Brosnan wanted to sign up for the part of 007 in the late 80s Bond movies Living Daylights and License to Kill, both of the Timothy Dalton movies, but due to Pierce's contract with a TV show he was starring in at the time, he was unable to get the part.... of course that paved the way for his eventual landing for Goldeneye years later.
I'm probably one of the few who actually liked Dalton as Bond (though perhaps he played the part just a bit too seriously. The new Daniel Craig nails down the serious vs. dry humor aspect much better), but that would've been interesting to see how Living Daylights and License to Kill would've turned out with Pierce Brosnan taking the lead.
I don't think so, I think that a good portion of these might have been logical choices at the time. A lot of what makes it unbelievable is comparing the proposed person to who actually got the role.
