Jon Walker is the sometimes proud owner of three mischievous kittens named Ryan, Spencer, and Brendon. Jon rescued Ryan from a shelter when he noticed Ryan had little cuts all over tiny, tabby body and was malnourished. Jon couldn’t help himself when he looked in Ryan’s honey eyes so he took Ryan home that day. Spencer was next. Jon got Spencer after a coworker’s cat had a litter and she offered him one for free. Spencer was the cat sitting off from the other kittens that immediately greeted Jon and started jumping on top of each other. Spencer sat nuzzling his mother’s stomach like he knew it would be the last time he would see her then calmly walked up to Jon and let out the cutest little mewl, nudging Jon’s hand with his head. Spencer is all yellow with orange tiger stripes, white paws, and intelligent green eyes. Jon found Brendon scrounging around the dumpster at the Starbucks where Jon works. Brendon was tiniest thing Jon had ever seen. He was all black with white paws, a white patch over one eye, and wide, wide yellow eyes. Jon scooped Brendon and let him sleep in the backroom for the rest of Jon’s shift. The first day really should have tipped Jon off as to Brendon’s personality when he managed to almost drown himself in the dish sink, knock over an entire bag of sugar, and still have time to sneak out front and parade himself to the customers.
Cassie, Jon’s girlfriend, finally moves in with him after months of arguing about it. Unfortunately, Cassie has fish and Brendon didn’t mean to kill them. Honest, he didn’t! They were just so colorful and shiny in the light and he didn’t think the weird things would die if he knocked over their glass. He just wanted them to come out and play for a while.
Jon was really scary when he yelled at Brendon and Cassie cried when she saw the mess. Brendon bolted and hid under the bed like Ryan did sometimes when there were loud noises. Brendon was shaking by the time Spencer and Ryan found him because he thought Jon was going to put him on the street like his old humans did when he was just a baby. Brendon remembers the mean street cats and the cold, cold rain and starving when he couldn’t find enough to eat. Ryan and Spencer just curl up on either side of him and try to convince him that Jon isn’t like that, he was just mad. Brendon is nearly lulled but shakes more when Jon and Cassie come into the room calling his name.
For once, Brendon isn’t coming when called and isn’t making any noise at all. Jon is worried about him and thinks he might have been too harsh. Jon kneels down and finds all three cats staring at him from under the bed. Brendon is pillowed by the bigger cats and tries to scoot away when Jon grabs for him. Brendon struggles in Jon’s arms before he just gives up. He meows his goodbyes to Spencer and Ryan and curls into a ball when Jon sets him on the bed. Cassie scratches his head because Brendon loves that but he resists the strong urge to push into her hand and pulls away. If he’s getting left again, he’s not going to put up a fight but he’s definitely not going to be loveable.
Jon and Cassie share a concerned look. Brendon is just lying on the bed croaking out these little meows that Jon is sure would be cries if Brendon was human. Jon gently prods the tiny cat with his hand, "Brendon?"
Brendon just keeps letting out those pathetic mews and doesn't move up to meet either of Jon or Cassie's hands. Cassie looks up, worried, "Jon?"
Jon bites his lip and shakes his head. They end up letting Brendon sleep in between them on the bed while Ryan and Spencer unchararistically lay at the bottom. Brendon always tries to get up into the bed at the end of the night while Ryan and Spencer are content to sleep in the cat beds by the window. When Brendon wakes up in the morning, Jon and Cassie are still sleeping. Brendon quietly jumps down from the bed and goes to curl up his normally untouched cat bed.
Jon and Cassie share a glance when they get up but don't outwardly say anything. Over the next week, Brendon is like a different cat. He's quiet and utterly respectful of boundries. He doesn't even curl up on top of Ryan or Spencer once. He won't greet Jon at the door anymore or sneak into the kitchen while Jon's making dinner to beg for scraps. Jon ends up taking Brendon to the vet.
Brendon loves going to the vet! He gets to meet all these strange, new animals and different humans coo over him. Sometimes, the doctors give him weird, pointy things that hurt for a second but they always give him extra cuddles after. This visit, however, Brendon just lie in his crate until they put him on the table, then he remained listless while the vets prodded at him.
Jon tells the vets what happened. The vet nods and asks Jon if Brendon has a history of abuse. She says, "In a case like this, I would say he was probably abandoned or mistreated as a kitten."
Jon is shocked because he never even thought about what Brendon could have gone through before Jon found him. Jon takes Brendon home and lies with him on the couch for a few hours. Ryan and Spencer hover before giving up and crowding in on the couch. After that, Jon is forgiven and Brendon cautiously starts returning to the way he was before. He's still iffy around Cassie until she brings him this awesome new toy that looks like a mouse. He goes spastic when Jon discretely fills it with cat nip. Ryan and Spencer even join in. Cassie frowns when all three cats start dashing from room to room and attack pouncing everything that crosses their path but she figures it's a small price to pay for having Brendon back.
Spencer is quietly amazing. If there's a loud bang coming from anywhere in the apartment, he probably caused it but you can never catch him at it. By the time Jon tracks the sound, Spencer is in a different room cleaning his front legs and giving wide, innocent eyes at Jon. Spencer also loves hunting. He spends summer days tracking the bugs that inevitably end up flying around the apartment. Brendon thinks eating bugs is so gross and Ryan can't be bothered to put forth the effort so Spencer gets all the flying things to himself. Jon occasionally wakes up to the odd mouse corpse lying in his shoes or on his bedroom floor. Spencer always looks suspiciously proud on these mornings, especially if Jon tries to put his shoes on without looking. Sometimes, Jon gets the feeling that Spencer is just making fun of him.
Ryan is still skittish around strangers. He tends to cling to Jon if he has to go anywhere. Once, Jon went away for a whole week and had his friend Tom staying in the apartment to take care of the cats. Ryan was devastated. He disappeared for the week and, by the time Jon came home, he's lost a whole pound because he didn't want to eat if Tom could see him. Oddly enough, Tom is now Ryan's third favorite human after Jon and Cassie. Tom ended up staying another week and Ryan was so excited to see Jon that he couldn't stay hiding. Tom and Jon sat on the couch for hours giggling and making the room smell funny and Tom spent the whole time petting Ryan. Tom made a friend for life.
Jon thinks his cats get along freakishly well for their distinctive personalities. Most days, Ryan and Spencer curl up together in the sun that shines through the window while Brendon splits his time between zooming around the apartment to play and falling on top of them for naps. Jon's not sure how he got so lucky but he's kind of really glad he did.
It's possibly crap. I don't know. It's one o'clock in the morning.
