We cross our bridges when we come to them and burn them behind us, with nothing to show for our progress except a memory of the smell of smoke, and a presumption that once our eyes watered - Tom Stoppard
Kisuke shares his story over tea and milk.
Kisuke tells Yoruichi everything he knows. Tells her of Aizen’s treachery, bitterness coating his words, thick at the sides. Yoruichi’s sitting and listening, patient, thoughtful. After Kisuke’s story, she downs all of her milk in one go and stands, tells him what’s going to happen now.
Yoruichi, being who she is, speaks like she’s coming with him. An obstinate force when Urahara raises protests that prove futile when he tries to convince her to stay.
Yoruichi stubbornly rebukes, says that she will follow him to the depths of Hell if she has to. It’s not fair that Kisuke has to face this all alone. That, and he’s completely irresponsible and will only get in more trouble if he’s left on his lonesome.
Kisuke’s given up trying to persuade her to remain, instead they’re both already beginning to plan their escape. They work into the early morning, plotting on how to bring the hollowed shells of the dead captains and lieutenants over to earth.
Kisuke’s spies Yoruichi watching one of her guards fondly just before they leave a day after, a smile of longing and familiarity in her eyes before she disappears behind curved shadows like she was never there in the first place.
Kisuke knows that secretly she fears leaving it all behind. Just a little.
He knows of her nervousness, her uncertainty.
And still she follows him. Always, she follows him.
He knows that even in death she’ll follow.
He is thankful. For this. For everything.
Together they give the Soul Society, their home, their sanctuary no longer, a final lingering glance, unspoken promises between them.
Kisuke takes Yoruichi’s hand, smells smoke from a distance, and remembers an old quote.
If the corners of Yoruichi’s eyes are burning or it’s simply morning dew, Kisuke doesn’t say anything to that.
He calls to her, squeezes her hand a little tighter, brushes a thumb over a gloved knuckle, “Yoruichi.”
Yoruichi looks up at Kisuke, shares with him secret conversations, abandons all of her inhibitions. She’s sure. She’s ready. It’s about time.
Kisuke stands, tells her it’s time to go, “We’ve got a bridge to burn.”
They burn that bridge and everything on it.
