Steak Liberties --
OK. The Norman and The Morrison Hotel both boast the best steaks in Brisbane.
As an avid steak eater I felt it my duty to put both in direct competition and here's the deal.
The Norman
The Norman really does have very excellent steak. All cuts of meat are visible in a bane marie type setup (of the chilled variety) and they offer a BIG range of sizes and body parts. Here I ate the (330g)Rib fillet, (as did Chris) medium rare, mushroom sauce.
It was cooked to absolute perfection. Beautiful piece of meat and the mushroom sauce was really really nice despite being creamy. Served with an idaho potato stuffed with bacon and a plain garden salad. The salad was average and the potato was a bit dry which all makes the meal, so it let me down there a little.
The Morrison
Now, for a place boasting brisbane's best steaks they only offered 3. Rump, Rib fillet and T-Bone. An eye fillet, however usually the most expensive steak you can get is also quite popular but they didn't have any. I got the Rib fillet again (350g). Chris had the Rump (400g). The rib was definitely a nice piece of meat, cooked awesomely for the most part, but not entirely evenly. Chris' rump seemed to have a huge amount of fat. Here the steaks were served with a special potato, (whole potato, gutted, mashed with cheese and butter and stuffed back inside the skin) and a caesar salad. The sides were definitely better here. Again, excellent mushroom sauce and not so creamy, bonus. Plus they had free trivia! We didn't get to play cause we were going to go see Finding Nemo but we'd definitely go back to play. 1 and a 1/2 hours worth! \o/
Both places, I'd say the rib fillets were roughly 22 dollars which is on the more expensive side of the scale but were definitely both great pieces of meat. In comparison, Amici's offer a (350g) Rump for $16.95. Really nice piece of meat for such a good price, but you pay with the quality of cooking (medium rare coming back more like medium well... no pink :/ I'm pretty sure all but one of the chef's are apprentices ) and although you get to choose your side, you only get one. Vegetables, chips or potato. The mushroom sauce there is again great and I'd definitely go back.
But all in all, if you're in it simply for the steak, I'd choose The Norman. Complete perfection. If you're going for the whole meal, definitely The Morrison Hotel (note : trivia game bonus) and still expect a well cooked steak. But for the price, Amici's.
This has been a public steakice announcement.
