lay like a dandy getting heavy in the sun

While Kristin is gone, I have discovered how I would live if I were single:

1. Wake up, curse the infernal sun and shuffle into work.
2. Work work work.
3. Go home and proceed to play video games for four hours, briefly pausing for dinner.
4. Go to sleep.
5. Lather, rinse and repeat.

So with that in mind, I've played a bunch of Guitar Hero recently. I've gotten through most of the songs on Hard now, which is cool. I've also begun delving into the bonus tracks, which gets me to the point of this post.

The bonus tracks are by indie bands, mostly because they don't cost much to license. A lot of it is just metal bands wanking, in which I have little interest. There are a few really good tracks, though - and the best is one from a band called The Slip; the song's called "Even Rats". On the band's home page, the front page contains a player that cycles through three songs and they're all excellent. "Even Rats" is a hell of a song, one of the best I've heard released post-2000 along with "Very Loud" by the Shout Out Louds, "Take Me Out" by Franz Ferdinand, "The Trapeze Swinger" by Iron & Wine and "Wake Up" by the Arcade Fire. This band has the potential to be huge. The single "Even Rats" has been played over 93,000 times on the band's MySpace page. The song may be a little long to be played on commercial radio but it could easily be radio-edited. If I had to classify the song and why it's so good, I'd say that it's a blend of arena rock mixed with an indie pop/rock asthetic that creates a song that's epic in sound that never become depersonalizing with intelligent, mature dream-pop lyrics.

"Even Rats" will be out on album Eisenhower, due in early November. I don't really buy or listen to a lot of brand new music but these guys are going to be getting my money. Check out "Even Rats" and "Children of December" (also on the new album) for free on The Slip's website - and if you can't wait, "Even Rats" is on Itunes as a single.
