Leslie, your counseling plans are really inspiring! I wish you the best of luck and I hope you get the opportunity to really help some people. I've wrestled a little bit with charity and religion lately. I'm not nearly as eloquent or educated on the subject as you, but I believe it's possible to find help without God. I think that a real, physical shoulder to lean on when you need help is a lot more valuable to people who are struggling than fostering this dependency on what? A fantasy? An ephemeral hope? How is that really constructive?

I really wanted to get involved with family support, especially during the holidays. Salvation Army makes me pretty sick. I hate reading or hearing about people pushing their idealism on people who are already desperate for help. How humane is it to say to someone, whether it's here in Canada or abroad in developing countries, "Oh here, let me help you, but only if you promise to give your heart to Jesus." It's terrible.

I want to help, but can't I just help because I'm human and I hate to think of other humans struggling? It's an ongoing investigation.
